Do any of you have to dress super smart for work? I work in the City for an Insurance company and my boss and her boss are very glam and always look perfect! I need to invest in some staple items and I am slowly putting together more suitable outfits but do any of you have any suggestions on what I should include as "essentials"
I have even started getting up 1/2 hour early to do my hair and make up not done that since a teenager!

I don't have to look super smart but I always look nice. I get up at the crack of dawn as you know so I can shower, wash dry & straighten my hair (then put it up if it's going up) then do makeup. Every day.
Don't you have to wear a suit everyday? That kinda takes the glamour out of it.

What do you wear now?

I mostly wear dresses for work - Next, Oasis & River Island. Usually gather them up in sales.
Buy the odd funkier one from Boohoo for a Friday that Im going straight our for dinner.

For super smart work wear I would include the following:
Jacket - matching suit jacket and at least one different coloured one that will co-ordinate with other outfits (something more like a blazer type thing or one of those 'Chanel' look but not Chanel prices )
Skirt suit - so jacket, with matching skirt
Dresses - wrap dress or simple style (along the lines that Hobbs sell), again depending on the styles you like.
Smart black trousers
Blouses/tops in a variety of colours and designs. Some smart ones in silk look fabrics plus others.
Those people I work with who dress really smartly tend to go for simple styles - nothing too cluttered looking - well cut clothes in colours that suit them (rather than what is very fashionable right now). A person who I think dresses really well is Karren Brady - nothing too 'fussy', simple lines, bright colours that suit her. She looks professional because her hair is right and she's made up and it all looks co-ordinated.

I have leggings, uggs and a long jumper on today, sometimes I wish that I could get dressed up

Cedar I like Karen Brady too. She wears dresses from here

She does wear some lovely clothes.
I wouldn't be able to get away with those close fitting dresses myself. Maybe when I've lost a bit more weight, but I suspect my stomach may still be with me.
I think of smart dressing for work as being a very grown up way of dressing. One of my colleagues who is very well presented gets clothes from Cos and Zara, among other shops.
There was a mum round here who always used to look immaculate - her clothes were very simple and nothing particularly fashionable but just looked right - and she always had her makeup and lipstick on. Put the rest of us to shame in the playground in our slummy mummy clothes But I'd like to channel some of her elegance for work at some point

I wear smart clothes; pencil skirts in neutral colours with a brighter or patterned coloured blouse/shirt, Smart trousers, again neutral colours, a line skirts with pattern and colour and a simple top. I also wear dresses a lot, wrap ones, or smart suit style ones. I tend not to wear suit jackets unless I have a big meeting or parent's evening, so I wear smart knitted jumpers and cardigans, but it's often too warm at work for them. I tend to keep jewellery simple, unless the outfit is very plain and then I'll wear a more statement type necklace.
I don't do much with my hair though and wear minimum makeup.
I could never go to work in denim or leggings or uggs, It would just be far to casual for me to be comfortable.

Belle - they're great aren't they. I do prefer skirts and dresses to trousers at work - makes me feel more feminine and smart. And weirdly I find people treat me slightly diffferently when I'm in them as apposed to trousers.

I've not worn trousers to work for years! Well the odd day wearing leggings & heels & shirt. I love the fashion / look of high waisted pencil skirt & blouse tucked in. Its my current work staple. I've got a few peplum dresses too. Primark have some lush collar less peplum blazers i fancy to finish off the look. Just too cold at mo.

I haven't gone down the peplum road - not sure if they wouldn't just emphasise my hips and bum too much. I should try some on. I do tend to see if fashions stcik around before I try them though - I'm not good at flash in the pan fashions!
