A was born in August 2010. I keep comparing her to F who at that age I was having full blown conversations with and her understanding was amazing for her age. A is much better physically than F was, A potty trained herself before she was 2, can dress/undress herself with minimal help and is good at jumping, can walk for ages etc but her speech is nowhere near as good as F's was, she has a lot of words but her speech is quite unclear. So I'm not sure what is normal because I keep comparing her to F who was advanced in speech, numbers, puzzles etc. So what are your 2 & half year olds doing? A knows all her colours, she can count to 19 and can careful count to about 8. However she doesn't recognise any numbers that are written down which I'm sure F was doing at this age. A is good at holding a pen and can draw people and the sun. Please share where your toddlers are at to put my mind at rest!

Well I don't have a toddler but I have a couple of friends who have children about the same age.
One - a girl - is physically fearless and very strong. Loves climbing and can pull herself up on things that I know my daughter couldn't. Her language has come on loads in the last couple of months and I can understand a fair amount but by no means all of what she says. I don't think she knows her colours yet. But she can colour neatly - definitely better than my daughter could at the same age.
The boy's language is also good. I don't think he constructs as many sentences as the girl. He is very good at jigsaws, loves doing them. He was a very early walker - 9 months old - so is physically confident.
As with every stage of development they'll be doing similarish things just not at the same time.

Oh and neither child is potty trained as yet. The girl shows no interest at all. Whereas her older sister was trained at the same age.

My second is 2y8m and is a really different child to his brother. At 2.5 he is really good physically, can dress and undress quickly, do two footed jumping and is very good with fine motor skills. His speech is a lot slower than his brother's was at this age but rapidly improving, he knows a couple of colours and has a go at a bit of counting but it depends on his mood. My first was (and still is!) a talker, but my second is definitely a walker/physically ahead.

Thanks for the replies. Margot your children sound exactly like mine in terms of which child is doing what. I do feel bad for comparing but I think it's because I feel guilty that I don't sit down and do as much with A as I used to with F (just don't have the time!!) I sometimes wonder if their very different personalities account for their abilities too - F is very intelligent but also difficult, tantrumy, frustrating and tempermental whereas A is placid, loving and very easy-going.

Its natural to compare siblings - its the thing you have to go by. Its interesting to see siblings who have very different personalities. One of my friends got quite a shock with her second child because the older one was physically quite laid back whereas the second one was rushing everywhere.
I'm guessing that a middle child with a close age gap probably has to fight a bit harder to get their voice heard - if you know what I mean.
