When its one of the kids' birthdays I have always bought the other a gift , just something little for about a tenner.
Am I odd or do others do this?
04/02/2013 at 13:44
No I've never done this and don't think I ever will to be honest.

Nope, never done this.
I went to school with a girl who got a gift on her brothers birthday, then went in a strop when he got one on her birthday. She didn't think it was fair when it was HER birthday, yet was fine accepting a gift when it was her brothers.
It's not something i'd do.

No, why would you? So the other doesn't feel left out? Well tough it's not their birthday.

When would it stop, having to get the sibling a big present as it was the other 18th, still buying both gifts when they are in their 30s??

I'm obviously odd then.
Belle I don't know. I think I did it when J turned one and we were going to a caravan park so I bought E some stuff for that (new cossie, new pj's, water gun etc) and gave her them before we went on J's birthday.

CP I know, that's what I'm thinking. I may stop it from now and I can't be bothered to look for something for him today.

I think they need to learn that they only get gifts on their own birthday otherwise it could get more complicated as they get older! The siblings always get to enjoy the cake, party & treats etc so it's still a nice day for them too!

WEES. You must be minted to be buying all these gifts!
I don't think you're totally odd though. My Nan used to buy me stuff on my sister's birthday and vice versa so neither of us felt left out at the fuss being made over the other...neither of us cared but we came to expect a gift.

I've got 4 children, I'd be broke if I did that!
I have an aunt who used to buy my sister a little gift on my birthday and vice versa. I think it only happened until I was about 8 or 9 though

No. It's not the sibling's birthday - what is the reason for them having a gift?
04/02/2013 at 16:10
Ha ha I'm definately not minted.
catarina, I don't know what the reason is, I think I started it so E didn't feel left out when it was J's 1st birthday.

No I dont do it but can see why you do, but tbh E is old enough to understand now, and J probably wouldnt notice!

I know 1stbaby I'm too soft ha ha.

No. I do buy for siblings of new babies- usually just a book or puzzle as I don't want them to feel left out after such a big event. Birthdays, I just wouldn't do it. My grandmother used to do this though so I don't think it is that uncommon.

Admittedly we did last year for E just because of her age that she didn't understand, what is actually was though was that we had bought a big pack of six disney fairy dolls at Christmas and given her 3 at Christmas, two on her birthday and one on J's birthday. I won't do it this year as she has more understanding.
