Hi all, im so pleased to finally announce that baby holly arrived on 31st December 07 at 6:20am weighing 7lb 1oz!
If you're interested, here is my birth story (be warned, it's a long one!)
My waters broke on the Friday night and contractions started soon after although they were irregular. By Sunday morning though they were less than 2 mins apart and lasting a minute each, and they hurt! So we went to the hospital feeling pleased with myself that I had coped so long at home.... got there and was 1cm! I had been awake for 2 days and was already in a lot of pain. I was given pethadine and a chance to have 2 hours sleep which was wonderful. During the day my contractions continued but didn't pick up. At 6pm the dr suggested that I have a syntosinon drip to "augment" labour as my waters went 2 days before and there was a risk on infection to the baby. I wasn't keen a I had heard this hurt a lot more and also I was finding it easier to be up and about where as with the drip I had to be monitored and strapped to a machine. But we knew we had to do what was right for the baby so at 8pm the drip was started.
I coped well until about 10:30pm when I was 4cm. I started to use gas and air but found it had a good few seconds delay and I couldn't get the timing right so suffered the contractions and felt drunk in between. I had an epidural at 11:30pm which they couldn't get in so had 4 attempts which was awful. When it finally worked I had 2 blissful and very enjoyable hours until it stopped working for some reason. They tried topping it up but the pain was unbearable and the top ups didn't work. I was 7cm. 2 mins later I was desperate for the loo (or thought I was!) and started demanding that they let me go to the toilet and that I had had enough, could do better on my own at home and that this was what I planned to do.... hmm, transition phase had arrived! I suddenly had to push, I couldn't stop myself and when they looked they were pleased and surprised to see that baby's head was indeed coming! I only had to push for about an hour, I could feel everything but looking back quite enjoyed this stage as my body just took over. When she was born she was placed straight on my tummy and we found we had a beautiful baby girl. It was so amazing, I can't tell you. I didn't require forceps or vontuse which I was so pleased with. However unfortunately when they delivered the placenta there was a lot of blood and they found I had a 3rd degree tear which was bleeding lots. I had to go straight to theatre so didn't get to breast feed my little one. In theatre they couldn't get a spinal in until the 5th attempt which was so painful and distressing.
Anyway, 3 days later I was allowed home today with baby holly. We are all doing so well. I had an awful pregnancy with sickness but every second was worth it and I can't wait to do it again!
Good luck to everyone still waiting! Love Sarah and Baby Holly xxx
