Hi annalisa you need to buy proper maternity pads for at least the first few days as you may bleed very heavily to the point my mw has even said you may need to wear 2 at a time! They are very cheap, ??1 for 10 in boots! Tammi xxx

I took maternity pads (boots) and wish I hadn't as they were rubbish. I didn't bleed that heavily at all, and yet I still leaked with them as they bunched up, I actually leaked all over the toilet floor in hospital! (very embarrassing.) I switched to Always pads after 2 days and they were sooo much nicer. x

Midwives tend to prefer that you use something like the maternity pads for 24 - 48 hrs as they are easier to tell whether you are losing very large clots etc which cud mean a problem internally. Usually after 48hrs the bleeding shud ease up and u'll be ok to use the Always ones.

I used Tena Lady super pads and they were very absorbent. I had a c-section tho so was in bed with hospital pad between my legs for the first day and night At home the Tena pads were good, then I changed to Always nightime - extra long with wings - when I got used to the bleeding.

I did use some large incontinence pads at first, as I thought the maternity pads wouldn't be big enough, but the nurse said I shouldn't use the i. pads as they were plastic backed, which meant air couldn't get to the area down below properly, which wasn't good for healing (I had an episiotomy). I switched to the maternity pads- from Tesco, 99p for 10 I think- which were fine. Would probably need to use at least 2 at a time for the first day or two when the bleedings heaviest though.

definatly need the proper thick maternity pads, as a midwife that is always what we recommend as they hold so much more and for the first couple of days you may need two in as the bleeding can be very heavy but after the first few days the Always with wings on will be fine Good Luck x

The thicker and more absorbent the better - after my first birth the hospital gave me some pads to use as the maternity pads I'd bought were rubbish. As soon as the midwife saw them she said they would be no good. They gave me really big pads to use and I had to use two at a time for the first couple of days. And found needed to change them really frequently. It sounds horrible I know, but it does ease off after a few days.

I have both! With my first I only took maternity pads into hospital and after an episiostomy and a 3rd degree tear with goodness knows how many stitches I was so uncomfortable and found the maternity pads really thick and bunched up, I wish I had taken some always nights in too. I used the maternity pads until they let me home 3 days after giving birth and then switched to Always nights.

I used proper maternity pads at first but found them bulky and uncomfortable. I switched to always night time with wings within the first 24 hours. Much more comfortable and less leakage as they are longer and stay in place better.

I used proper maternity pads to start off with last time and just found them really bulky and uncomfy. I just didn't trust them to be fair, I know the midwifes tell you that they need to be breathable without the pastic backing to avoid infection however I got an infection last time anyway. This time I have invested in always night time.

I agree the bulky ones for the first couple of days, also get yourself those really attractive throw away knickers ... again only needed the first couple of days but worth it.

No one has mentioned stitches so I will! Be careful what you buy as you don't want to use anything with a weave top incase you have to have stiches & they might catch on the pad.
I bought Mothercare maternity pads which were fine & then moved onto Always Ultra Maxi (the ones you get an ASDA coupon for!) I think, then I just moved onto ASDA's own brand cheapies!

I was going to say the same thing. I bought some nighttime pads with a dry weave cover and my stitches got caught. Talk about painful! As if I needed more pain that week! I highly recommend maternity pads for the first little while. Double them up if necessary. I wore three at one time for a bit: two side by side and one further back. I was a lovely look I'm sure! I used disposable pants for the first few days so I just threw the lot out rather than just changing the pads. Much less messy.

hi. i have found that kotex night time are excellent for after birth and the few days that follow when you will be bleeding heavily. they are really padded and long and i always felt secure in them, no leakage. then by day 5-6 i swap to a super pad. i used normal maternity pads after having my first baby and found that they were useless. too thin, not very absorbant and i leaked in them. so i always use kotex night time. xx
