Could I ask, what are your best childhood memories?

I can't remember much before age about 5, but most of the highlights now feel like the things that were never meant to be 'special' in an organised way; more like early morning gardening with my dad before he went to work, or going to the end of the pier extension on a blustery winter day

How about you?

Can't wait for spring....

I wish I could remember some great childhood memories, unfortunately most of mine are sad ones.  Why do i remember them instead of the good ones as I must have them!

I remember a couple of things..... I used to love dancing and use to love making up dance routines with my cousin and putting on a show for our grandparents.

When I no longer believe in santa clause but my little sister did I remember helping put all the presents out for her and I loved that, so excited for her.

I have starterd writing notes in a book about funny things my little boy says or does or just odd bits and pieces too look back on when we are older that way I wont forget!

I always remeber painting at nursery. My parents used to own a garage & I used to go in the hols & spend time in the office with my mum while my dad & brother worked on cars. When it came to painting I always used to imagine the garage because I missed it in term time. I used to look at the finished painting & thing 'Ah, perfect, can't wait to show mum & dad'. Looking back it looked nothing like it, just random blobs of bright paint but I loved it.

I also remember going to the neighbours house every Sunday. We used to bake pies & cakes & buns & it was fantastic. My neighbour did what I like to call 'proper old lady cooking'. She has since died & I always think of those Sundays & the fun we had. I miss her so much but have great memories.

One more, my mum got my name put on Childrens Channel when it was cable not Sky etc. My name whizzed across the bottom of the screen so quick but I was late for school because we'd waited to see it. I remember I was 6 years old & rubbed all the cards that had glitter on my face & head so I would sparkle & everyone would know it was my birthday. So easily pleased

Christmas, when we were small we used to go to see Father Christmas at Selfridges. We got to go on the tube,we were out after dark and they always did, think they still do,a theme for the grotto,so as you queue, you have something to look at.The one I remember was when it was The Rescuers. You get a little gift from the big man and mine that year was a dolly who had a real nappy complete with pins(love the 70's)

I remember my baby brother being born.I was 2 and 2 months, but I was expecting someone new to play with.I still remember the disappointment at the bald sleeping thing.I also remember my older brother and I running round like loonies, stopping only to drink all my Mum's juice.

I have lots of memories from when we lived in London. We moved out of the area when I was five, but I moved back there,or nearby as an adult, and it was strange to walk down the same streets and what you actually remember.

I loved family holidays. Not everyone's cup of tea,but we camped and we'd be  playing outdoor games together, usually all the kids on the campsite, till it got dark.

Playing games together as kids.We had creations we built in the garden, shared imaginary games, there was one we seemed to play a lot involving us living in a horsedrawn cart,on the run, from what I don't know.Board games too.The advantages of coming from a large family, always others to play with

Of course you can ask!

oh gosh, we used to spend *days* gathering rubbish from the woods and pretending we were Wombles. I still enjoy sorting things into neat piles to this day...

And jumping streams... some near us were pretty rank... there often seemed to be a log or rock in the middle that one person could jump onto safely... then it sank under for the next person

And cooking. I loved cooking. Some kitchen smells - like vanilla -take me straight back to mum's warm kitchen when I was four or five, standing on a chair at the worksurface.

Lovely.

My earliest childhood memory is of my auntys first wedding when I was about 2, but its not a crystal clear memory iykwim-its a bit fuzzy round the edges!  I remember being in the church but not much else.  And then my wee brother being born a couple of months later.  He was a 'big' baby when he came so was in high dependacy unit for the first couple of days.  I remeber being very upset that i couldnt get to touch him as only mum and dad were allowed in the unit-got to peer at him through the window.

I also remeber my grandparents first dog-Mickey.  He was a black collie/lab cross and he was always by my side when we visited.  He always took care of me when we were out, never let anyone get to close.  I used to lie on the floor and he would lie with his head on my tummy.  And he loved polo mints-he could sniff them out within seconds of you coming in!  I was inconsolable when he died...

We used ti visit an elderly relative with my grandad too, and her house was full of ornaments and interesting bits and pieces-I loved going there.  There was always lots of other people in the house too, and they used to tell us stories from their childhood.

It's lovely to read these - thanks everyone!

Sym, I love the image of a little girl glittering at school so everyone knew it was her birthday!

Lynne, you've reminded me of what vivid memories I have of some old people's houses. My great grandad smoked a pipe, and that smell takes me back there to this day, even though we only went two or three times. And my gran had a drawer of treasure in the sideboard - a metal harmonica, one of those slideshow things where the slides were on a cardboard circle and you put both eyes up to the holes to look through, some binoculars with an old leather case... all sorts of bits and pieces

And playing cards to play Newmarket. I can't remember how to play it now, but when the siblings were out, gran and I would play. Happy days

Any more??

Can't wait for spring....
