Hello mummies

I am DESPERATELY seeking birth stories (again!!!!) for Practical Parenting magazine. YOUR magazine!

Do you have any friends who have any friends who fit the following birth story themes:
(must be within the last 18 months)

a) Gave birth in a foreign country

b) Had an unexpected birth partner (paramedic, neighbour, shop assistant!)

c) Got a shock at the birth because the baby was maybe not the sex she thought, had lots of hair, had teeth, arrived unexpectedly breech.... etc... something funny or unusual!

d) gave birth on a special day - like a birthday or a wedding or a day planned to go on holiday!

e) gave birth on the hospital floor, on the toilet, at home in the kitchen, in the ambulance - anywhere but on the bed!

please please please forward to your mum friends and get in touch. racheldelahaye@yahoo.com.au

no recent birth story i'm afraid as isabels 2 now. but she's been ventilated twice in last yr with pneumonia, rsv, influenza and more and i'd love for parents to read her story. both experiences have caught me off guard and its been a total nightmare! having said that she's home for now but you can read her story in full on the premature section called isabels life so far. please let me know what you think,
thanks, kirsty

I had my baby girl two years ago now (just) in the Kitchen. She was delivered in a planned home birth, in a birthing pool, using the hypnobirthing technique.

I am pleased to report that she was born painlessly and I would even go as far as to say enjoyably (not many people can say that!) into the world with your very own PP Midwife Anne Richley to catch her!

I'd had a baby boy 23 mths earlier and the birth stories are very different. I was determined that my second birth attempt would be given the best chance to be one which I could control and more importantly, not feel a 'failure' as with my son 'I failed to progress to the second stage' and he was subsequently born in theatre using forceps. So I was absolutely amazed when I had birthed my daughter and enjoyed it! Strangely both my children were born on their due date.

I began feeling some twinges which I just thought were braxton hicks around 11am on Tuesday 4th April 2006. By the time it was time for bed they had increased in strength and frequency but didn't hurt so I went to bed to try and get some sleep in anticipation of the what could possibly lie ahead. I couldn't sleep, I was excited because I knew this was labour! So I went downstairs and got into the birthing pool which had been kept at the ambient 37 degrees for a week already and switched on the little spa lights I had in the pool. My husband couldn't sleep for the thought of missing something, so came downstairs to sit and time the contractions whilst watching a horror movie! The contractions were coming frequently at five mins apart roughly though they had moments of being sporadic. So he decided he wanted to know how far along we were and rang for the on-call midwife.

We continued to do what we had been doing, I listened to calm music and some affirmations, whilst breathing deeply and slowly, much like you do when you are sleeping or sleepy and relaxing to go to sleep, through each contraction. The water really felt gorgeous and I sipped on an ice filled glass of water.

Because we didn't think I was that far along the midwife, Anne Richley took her time in arriving. When she arrived at the door I had my first pushing contraction, Anne observed me and realised I was further along than first thought and began madly fetching her required equipment into the kitchen. I was relaxed and in control. The pushing feeling was brilliant, somehow instinct told me to push using what few muscles I could operate above and at the top of my bump to push my baby down. It was easy and incredibly effective. Two pushes more and Anne caught baby Hayley in her hands, not getting a chance to pull her sleeves up! And still no pain! I stared in utter amazement at my daughter in my arms whilst we waited for the umbilical cord to stop pulsating. Then my husband snipped away. The second on-call midwife arrived and realised she had missed the action but was just in time to weigh baby and check her over.

I delivered the placenta approx. 10 mins later again with no pain. All I could think about was I, yes me, had just delivered a baby into the world and it didn't hurt! AMAZING! I was stunned! What a fantastic time I had had, I wanted more children straight away.

Baby Hayley was perfect and had a top apgar score both times she was checked. I was grand, I hadn't even got a nick (I was dredding tearing after having had an episotomy previously). I was up hoovering the livingroom floor just 3 hours later, I loved everyone coming round to see our new baby which gave me the opportunity to keep saying how brilliant a time I had had! I am sure people must have thought and perhaps still think I am barmy, but I needed to keep saying 'it didn't hurt' to believe it myself!

the week before my due date i was having terrible pains that brought me to tears but when i got to the hospital they told me they were braxton hinx so i went home. 3 days after my due date i woke up at 7am having twinges so i ran a bath and got in by the time i got out the pains felt the same as the braxton hinx i was doubled over in pain so i woke my partner at 8am. His mum came to take us to hospital at 10am, the contractions were just minutes apart but when i got to the hospital the midwives examined me and told me i was just 1-2 centimeters dilated and that we'd be there all day so her advised me to go home but i didn't and good job too! When my mum arrived at 10.30am ater being rung at work i was begging to have an epidural but the midwife said no cos i was far along enough so she gave me pethidin at 10.55am and told me to relax it would kick in in 20 minutes at exactly 11.15am my waters broke in a gush just a 2 midwives walked in they noticed alot of blood in my waters and put a monitors on my bump to see if my baby was ok they couldn't find a heartbeat, mothers instinct i suppose i pushed the monitor down abit and there it was beating away they checked me examined me agian and told me i was 10 centimeters half a hour later at 11.55am madison was born weighing 8lb 11oz ,after i was told i was only in established labour for 1hour and 2minutes [image]http://img079[/image] [image]http://lilypie.com/baby_display.php?f=b1[/image]

Hi, with my second child I gave birth on my living room floor after 23 minutes of established labour! Is this the sort of story you wanted?!

I started having contractions at 5 am on Sunday 4th May 2008. I was not aware of what it was like to start on my own as I was induced with my Son due to Pre-eclampsia. I did not realise it was the real thing until about 1pm (Previously I had three false alarms). I was told that the contractions had to be 5 minutes apart and lasting 1 minute before I was to go into hospital.

At 3pm I called the hospital to let them know I had started but the contractions were irregular. I was told to have a bath take paracetamol if the pain got worse but I was told I would be ages as I was 14 hours with my Son. On a scale of 1-10 (1 painless) I was on a 2-3. At 4pm my Son was collected and I had a bath. at 5pm my Mum and sister turned up to see how My Husband and I were getting on. The contractions were still irregular swaying from3 minutes apart to 15 minutes and were only lasting about 15-25 seconds. Again the pain was only a 3. At approximately half past 5 I had a really strong contraction which sent me running to the toilet. The pain went from 2/3 to a 9 and I felt desperate to go to the toilet. We called the hospital who told me to make my way in but still told me not to rush!

From this moment on things were a bit hazy but basically I got in the car, got out the car, put towel on the seat got in again, got out by my sister pulling me. Ran to the toilet and mid contraction I pulled the radiator off the wall (No lasting damage was done). At this point my Mum realised that the feelings I was getting regarding the toilet was actually me getting ready to push (Again I had none of this as was induced and had an epidural the first time).

At this point my Mum got my Husband to call an ambulance. The quick response turned up within 5 minutes of the call, got me on the floor, asked lots of questions then informed me that when the ambulane arrived I would be whisked to the NEAREST hospital (which was not the one I was with)! He examined me again and then grabbed my BRAND NEW dressing gown and put it underneath me. Within 5 minutes and 5 pushes my daughter was born on my brand new dressing gown, on my brand new carpet, in my brand new house with NO curtains shielding us from our neighbour!

My daughter arrived just as the ambulance did and with no midwife. The paramedics were not allowed to cut the cord so we had to call a friend who is a midwife as my hospital could not get one that quickly. Therefore my daughter lay on the floor (cord very short) waiting for our friend to turn up.

AThe most wierdest thing was my whole family (father, sister x3 and niece) then turned up whilst I was still on the floor with daughter attached and sat opposite drinking tea whilst I gave birth to the after birth. Oh and no one gave me a cup of tea!

Hope this has been entertaining for you. It will make on hell of a wedding speech!

Hi Rachel.  My daughter was born on my nephew's birthday, three days before my uncle's birthday, day after two friends, not very exciting but was only nine months ago.  She was distressed during labour, meconium in the fluid and was a ventouse delivery.  Sorry can't be more dramatic!  PM me if you do want more...

I used Natal Hypnotherapy for both my births - George was born at home in an original bpiab - which had cartoon fish all over it and I then saw up for sale in a toy shop not long after as a paddling pool!!!  I was so relaxed with the Natal hypnotherapy second time round that I nearly didn't bother to call anyone when my waters borke - but was glad I did when I gave birth just under three hours later - he was born in the bath!!!!

I gave birth on christmas day. What makes it extra special is that my partners birthday is christmas eve and my brother-in-laws boxing day. We were actually in the pub celebrating my partners 21st birthday when my labour started.

I arrived at hospital at half 12 and had my little girl, Maddison Theresa Record, at 2.35am weighing 5lb15 on christmas morning. My midwife couldnt believe how fast my delivery was as she was my first. I dilated 4cms in only half hour and was only pushing 20mins. I only used gas and air but doubt there would of been time for any other pain relief even if i had wanted it. I got home just 12hours after I went to the hospital, I slept with my baby on the sofa all afternoon while my partner cleaned up. I remember him bringing my presents to me but was that exhausted I couldnt remember what I had been brought. I recently moved house and was wondering where all this stuff came from, luckily my sister-in-law had brought maddison some christmas presents just in case so she wasnt left out.

i was induced after having high bp and suspected pre eclampsia during pregnancy it was an incredibly eventful birth wih my waters being broken popped by my lovely midwife (no she really was lovely) at 4pm.i was in full blown labour (8cm dilated) by 7:30pm and even without pain relief i was just under the impression the hospital sausage and mash had gone thru me perhaps a little to quickly!half an hr after this the pain hits and baby is trying to come out.i think the radio is being fast forwarded my partner has to rush to the loo as it all gets too much for his lil tummy and my midwife realsies that my lil bundle of joy is...breech!typical.my comm midwife had said he was from 28 wks but my hospital cancelled the scan at 37 wks saying i was fine and his head was engaged!i was wheeled off to theatre where my emergency surgical team are all arguing wheter or not i should give birth naturally.i'm being told by my midwife keep him in dont push and the surgeon is telin me to push while my anaethetist is getting angry because my already high blood pressure was rocketing!all ended well though and 2 days later i was home after my c section but next time round i'l demand thngs be done as my comm midwife ordered and definatley make sure my worries and desires in the theatre or delivery room are observed!
