and how old are they?

Duncan has been saying words from a year old - BUT hes not talking yet!

So far he has said:

'Dada'
'Mum'
'Tickle'
'Cow'
'Toes'
'Peekaboo'
'This'
'Babe'
'Leaf'
'Stop!'
'Fifi'
'num num'
'up'
'duck'
'Quack quack'
'no!'
'bubble'
'kee kee' (for kitty)
'Yeah'
'Baa'
'Moo'
'Eight'

But - thats about it...and hes only said them for a day!

(so hes said them, but not yet agian! lol)

He understands everything though - Should I be worried or is it still early days?

Do you think boys are a bit slower at speech than girls?

Never been in a rush for anything, but I do know him talking will help cut down on both our frustrations!

I wouldn't worry too much at this stage, but keep talking to him lots and give him plenty of opportunity to respond/copy.

Samuel's 14 months and says several words regularly now, but he's far ahead of other children he mixes with so not a good benchmark to compare yours to. Comparing children can be dangerous - we end up thinking there's something wrong with them because another child can do one thing better/quicker/earlier. The fact that he understands so much is great, and the speech will come if you keep at it!

It is so hard to say,boy's are more likley to be slower in speech there sometimes concentrating on other things in there developement.
Some children with speech delay get refered to ICAN a nursery for children with speech problems,but i don't think you should worry about that yet.
I think there developement target is 20 -50 word's by 2 i think then they should start using 2 part sentancing.
Ben is just turned 2 and he say's about 30ish he dose repeat what we say.
I dont think your comparing to other children your just following your instincts.

ben is 17m and its hard to say how many words he says - lots of them sound the same lol! his faves are: crab, woof, that, moon, nan, mine and more!

he's learning baby sign at them moment and has just started to say more whilst doing the sign - will be interesting to see if he starts talking more now!

Ive done baby sign with Duncan since he was 4 months old - but hes only ever picked up 'incy wincy spider'!!! lol (wich surprises me as hes a hands on type of learner as well!!! - but hes never pointed and is only just now this past week started to lift his hands to be picked up! :O)...anyroad...I wouldnt have that list if I didnt write these things down when he said them anyhow! hehe

my litle one started talking in sentences jus after he turned 18 months and my nephew was 2 before he said his 1st word... my little one has now turned 2 and talks non stop and by about 6pm i wanna mute him lol.... make the most of the quiet time it wont last long lol

I think the fact that he understands you and is making an effort to talk is a good sign - he just needs a bit more practise.

I always thought girls wer faster then boys for talking but thats not how its been with Adam so I think maybe its just an individual child thing. Like they all have different things theyre good at so with Duncan its hands on sort of things and Adam its communication (but he gets bored with hands on things like jigsaws and shape sorters).

HI AGAIN,RILEY WAS THE SAME,SAID QUITE ALOT OF WORDS AT THAT AGE AND MY G.P.SAID AS LONG AS HES CAN SAY A FEW WORDS NOT TO WORRY.HE NEVER REALT SAID A SENTANCE BUT IT WAS JUST AFTER HIS 2ND BIRTHDAY THAT HE STARTED AND NOW HE JUST DONT SHUT UP.HE DID HAVE A VERY GOOD UNDERSTANDING WHICH WAS GOD AS IT MENT HE KNEW WHAT WE WERE SAYING BUT WAS JUST A BIT LAZY TO RESPOND,I'D SAY BOTS DO TEND TO BE SLOWER THAN GIRLS.BUT HEY THAT MY OPINION?HEHE.

OH HIS FAVE SAYING AT THE MO IS''TIA-WANNA-MA'',I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO MEAN BUT IT SOUND GERAT.X

i've added up the words he can say and he says around 22 words from the ones i can remember (wish i'd been writing them down all along)! he can also say 2 sentences, 'what's that' and 'don't want'. kye's 22 months and he's learning a new word every other day on average at the moment. kye said his 1st word when he was 10 & 1/2 months (surprisingly it was no!) today he said duck for the 1st time. boys tend to be slower at everything i think. kye's the same as duncan and understands everything i say to him.

My daughter is 4 and I often have trouble understanding her when she talks fast. She's very very good at the non verbal communication though far better than my son, whose 8. My toddler says no no and no. I mean he says a few more things but he like his "nos"

My little girl (nearly 17 months) is a REAL chatter box. I have been writing down all the words that she says unprompted, that's to say, words she uses on a more or less regular basis. So far we are up to 104! Yesterday alone she had 9 new words! She is going to get into SO much trouble at school!
I'm showing off, I know. What can I say, I am a proud mummy.

nj has an older sister who is thirteen monhs older and she says more words at 21 months old than my niece who is 32 months and still has a dummy.i found that taking the dimmy and bottle away helped the rate of speech pick up
