I've just registered so please bear with me.

My partner and I have decided to take the plunge and try for a baby. I've been on the depo injection for as long as I can remember and had my last one 12 weeks ago - hurray!

We'll both be classed as older parents so whilst I'm being positive I'm not shopping for baby stuff just yet...

I was wondering if anyone has any good advice for me. I'm trying to lose my excess weight (about 1.25 stone), I know I should stop drinking alcohol but is there anything else I can do to help things along?

Thanks
Nicolette

Hi Bridget, welcome to PP. I hope you enjoy coming on here and getting to know us all. Everyone is really friendly and supportive.

You don't say how old you are, but you say 'classed' as older parents so I assume that you are in your 30s? If so, that isn't 'old' and I wouldn't worry too much about that. I am 38 weeks pregnant with no. 2 and I am 35 which also comes under 'old' but my blood test results came back as lower risk than with my first and on par with someone in their early 20s.

Giving up alcohol is a good idea, for both of you as it can affect sperm as well, so ask hubbie to do that to up your chances. Not smoking is a good all rounder for a healthy lifestyle as well. Eating a healthy diet, lots of fruit, veg, lean meat, low GI foods such as whole grain bread instead of white and cut right down on refined sugars can work wonders and help you lose weight carefully. A good friend of mine lost 3st and conceived after being told she had no chance due to polycystic ovaries after following a low GI diet for a few months. And above all relax about it. Don't stress if you find that nothing happens for a few months, it won't help and you'd be amazed how much emotions can interfere with the normal running of your body.

Good luck, keep in touch and let us know how you get on. N. xx

Hi Bridget,

Welcome to PP.

Nicolette has given you some great advice about diet, but to help lose the weight it will help if you exercise a little more than you normally would. Things like walking up the stairs in a shop instead of taking the lift or getting off the bus a stop earlier so you have a little further to walk, just little things but it really can help.

Hope things go to plan for you.

Zoe xx

Hi Bridget,

I'm Sarah and me and my hubby are currently ttc#1 aswell.

The girls here are great for advice and for a chat.

I was until recently doing Weight Watchers - i've found that a fab diet - if you wanted to go to a slimming club?

Best of luck with ttc and with the weight loss! Look forward to chatting to you soon. x

Hiya Bridget,
welcome to pp, hope you are enjoying the site!!
congrats on ttc, hope it all goes well for you. i agree with the others, and diet and exercise are a good start, as well as giving up alcohol.

another BIG piece of advice (easier said than done) is to try not to get too stressed out about it.

hope you are well
look forward to chatting soon

I would add stop smoking if you are smoking ( i know this might be obvious ) and start taking folic acid supplements.

Hi Bridget,
My name is Marie and mum to Jake who is 2 and a half. We are ttc #2. I also came off the depo injection last May. It took a while for my preiods to come back to normal so don't worry if it take longer than you think. My hubby's been away since Oct so that's not helped us. My neightbour fell the first month of trying after she came off the depo. Good Luck.
All the girls are great on here and offer sound advice.

Hi Bridget, my name is Pauline and I have 2 children just started ttc for number 3.
I haven't been on the injections but have just come off the pill, all these things can take a few months to leave the system. Please try not to be too disappointed if you don't fall straightaway. It will be worth the wait (please give me this advice back when I am still ttc and pulling out my hair in 8 months time - lol!)
There seem to be a few of us ttc at present so we can support each other.

Take care and good luck to all ttc!

Thank you everyone for the great advice and good luck to all of you who are trying as well.

My other half had great delight in telling me all my favourite food I won't be able to eat when I am pregnant, I'm not sure he realises that it'll be off the shopping ist for him as well!

Hi Bridget. I feel the same way, all my absolute faves, those tidbits that are guaranteed to cheer me up are all those that are off the menu, at least for the next 15 days (five till due date and then max of ten before induction!). I love pate, seafood especially oysters and scallops that are never cooked through if done properly, foie gras, strong coffee, rare steak, and the alcohol... Still not long for me now!!

Good luck in TTC and do keep in touch and let us know how you get on!

N. xx

Hi - nope, not a thing. I think my midwife will be surprised to see me on Wednesday, everyone told me that I'd deliver early so I feel rather cheated! Someone asked me today when I was due and it felt so weird to say "Saturday". I think she's going to be late. The last one caused problems and I think she will too for the exact opposite of reasons!

My midwife kept saying i would be early, I now know that is the kiss of death. I know you are probably uncomfortable and just want to meet her, but try and enjoy your last few days the three of you, as it will soon be manic. Take care xxx
