Hiya Em, That's great your hubbie has taken the initiative to do this himself....it is better to know what you're dealing with, whatever the outcome.
Your hubbie will need to ejaculate into a pot (a bit like a urine sample pot) and take it to the hospital within 1 hour of producing the sample. He should abstain from ejaculating for 3-5 days before doing the sample. There is not much he can do to improve the results, apart from leaving the right amount of time between abstiaing....any longer than 5 days and there may be a large amount of dead / poor swimming sperm....any less that 2 days and there may be a low number of sperm.
In the analysis they will be looking at count (how many sperm in sample), motility (how good they are at swimming) and morphology (percentage of normal spem), as well as looking for agglutination (clumping of sperm) and antisperm antibodies (basically where man's body is killing his own sperm).
You will probably have to wait a week or so if the results go to the GP, but the results will be available at the fertility clinic within the day of having the test (but they probably won't give them to you).
    Good luck xx
