    Hi Sweetie
Are you still breastfeeding with nipple shields? If so, how is it all going? I have been using them the whole time but they are a real pain to try and breastfeed in public as Sam ends up batting them off when I try and get him to latch! Very ungraceful! I tend to avoid BFing in public as a result.

I can get him to now latch without them but its pretty sore and I am not sure I want to go down that route now! Otherwise, they have worked brilliantly for me. And have had no negative effect on my milk supply at all. Not sure why the literature says they will??

    Hi Bryony

Sorry I only just noticed this...

Jakob would only latch on with the help of a nipple shield when we left hospital. I have tried to latch him on without every once in a while since then, but he tended to just flap about on my boob as if nothing was in his mouth - However, as of last week he actually does latch on without the shield! I couldn't believe it when he first did it... I nearly forgot to put the shield on cause I was knackered and then I thought I might as well try without and he actually drank! He pulled himself off after a while and then noticed the shield was gone I think so he screamed until I put it on  But yes, since then he has been able to do it - I don't think he drinks as well or as much than when he has the shield though so at night I feed with the shield (which seems to be working as he's sleeping longer and longer).

I know what you mean about BF in public... Is quite a faff to get the shield on discreetly and hope baby doesn't yank it off at some point and expose you even more! I'm rather glad that we can now at least try without it; I do take a shield with me though just in case. New problem now is that he pulls off the breast more often which makes them sore and he gets squirted in the face lol

I really haven't noticed a negative effect at all so I don't know either why they have such a bad reputation! Jakob has been thriving from the off - only lost 200g initially and put it back on by day 5 and now he weighs over 5.5kgs so he is perfect!
