How many times should I wash them?
at what temp? 30/40?
do I use detergent every time?

My care label said wash 10 times before 1st use, but I only washed once and just changed the nappies a little more frequently to begin with.
I wash at 50 normally, and every now and then up it to 90 for a deep clean. You could probably get away with 30 but as it's poo/wee I like to be extra cautious. Have learned from the ladies on here to do a rinse cycle first to avoid baking in the poo
You use a third of your normal amount of detergent, NO fabric conditioner.

They reach their maximum absorbancy after 10 washes, but you don't have to do 10 before starting using them IYSWIM. If you were doing a special load then I wouldn't bother with detergent (and remember they don't need to dry between washes) but you could just chuck a few in with each load you are doing anyway rather than doing all that extra washing that you don't need to.
Normally I did the following for washing nappies (once being used rather than pre-washing)
normal wash at 60
I found the extra rinse at the end stopped the build up of detergent so I didn't have to strip them.

Oh yes I'll use a much higher temp when they are in use but this is just he pre washing before I start using them.
10 washes and 10 lots of detergent seems excessive though! I might do 3 or 4 quick washes I think

I wouldn't use detergent at all in pre-washing them, no point starting the build up before you need to. I reckon your plan sounds fine.
