Some of you may recognise me from Hitched / before the 'split' but I am a DTC-er who got a BFP on Monday. It was my fourth cycle on clomid that appears to have worked! Still early days, I'm 4+4 (ish) so I'm still really worried/nervous as you can imagine.
As I am on clomid my consultant advised me to go to my GP when I found out I was pregnant to arrange an early scan to check for multiples. Anyone that has had an early scan, is it an internal ultrasound or a 'normal' ultrasound?
I have a feeling the wait for the scan is going to feel like a very long one!

All of my early scans have been internal.
Congratulations on your BFP. I know what it is like to feel nervous, take each day as it comes x

I had an early scan at 6 weeks, and it was an internal (tried external, but my blubber meant they couldn't pick up a HB, so they tried an internal)
Congratulations Browny. x

My scan at 7/8 weeks was external.

I had a scan at 8 weeks. It was a normal US but was told that they'd do an internal if they couldn't see what they needed to.

Thanks, I thought it might have to be internal if they do it around 6 weeks as they migh not be able to see anything, it just seems a bit weird to put something up there that shouldn't be this early on!
Just got to wait for my appointment to come through now! X

I had an external scan at 7 and it was no problem. Would you consider a private scan? You can sometimes get them within a day or two. I paid £60 for mine, but had my heart set on an early scan after a previous early mc.
Oh browny, massive massive congrats!!! I'm so pleased for you!!
In answer to your question, I had an early scan at 6+1 and it was a 'normal' external. She was just about to ask me to go empty my bladder when she picked up something on the screen and we saw the heartbeat.
I've had an early internal too and it's not actually that bad

I had an internal scan at 7 weeks.

Congratulations!! I hope your pregnancy goes well. i had internal early scans. the hospital policy was that all scans before 12 weeks were internal. x

I has external scan around 7-8 weeks
Just wanted to say massive congrats and an crossing fingers for a healthy few months for you. We were on the mttc threads together and I've been waiting for your bfp, so pleased for yiu

Thanks all, so it really does depend! :/
Counter - At the moment (as my GP pointed out to me) they wouldnt be able to see anything anyway. Hopefully my scan date should come through soon anyway. If there was a delay in it coming through I would definitely have a private one to put my mind at rest. Sounds as if 6 weeks is ideal to check for heartbeat etc?

Browny!!! Congratulations!!!! I'm beyond made up to hear this news!!! I've no advice re early scans, but wanted to send my congratulations to you! Xxx

I think so Browny. When I rang the clinic I went to they were a bit iffy about 6 weeks but really happy about getting a result at 7, but mine was just my being nosey, not for a good reason, if you see what I mean. Lots of folk seem to get informative scans at 5 and 6 weeks too.

hello and congrats on your BFP, i had my early scan at 6+1 and it was internal also had one at 9+0 that was also internal
at six weeks there was just a tiny little dot with a heart beat!
04/09/2013 at 09:24
I think 6-7 weeks is the best time to see a heartbeat and if you see a hb at that stage it's very promising that the pregnancy will be successful.
I've had external scans at 6-8 weeks each time.
Huge congrats and hope its a very uneventful 8 months for you x

Sorry, don't have anything to add for OP. Other than Congrats of course!!!! :)
Wanted to ask - (I don't have BFP, just curious), when you say 6 weeks for these scans, is that dated in the usual way? From first day of cycle? Just for someone with say a 40 day cycle, they might actually only be 3 weeks along from ovulation at 6 weeks etc.
04/09/2013 at 09:30
MrsA - they date it from the first day of your last period, but if you have long cycles your date will change when you have your first scan. It's basically 2 weeks before ovulation. Hope that makes sense. X

I went to the epu at 5+5 ( I think) due to a possible ectopic, they never attempted an external scan just went straight to an internal ( which wasnt as unpleasant as I had feared) discovered rather than an ectopic it was twins and could see 2 sacs with 2 tiny flickering grains of rice in them and the screen picture was really clear. At 7+3 had an external scan and they easily found both sacs and yolks and the heart beats were really obvious and there was a blob rather than a grain of rice with a obvious heartbeat rather than a flicker although the picture wasnt quite as clear as on the internal ( I guess cause they are not as close to the babies)
Massive congratulations and fingers crossed your appointment comes through quickly.

Oh my Browny! This is WONDERFUL news!!! I'm thrilled to bits for you!!! I had an internal scan at 7+3 as she wanted the best possible picture. It's absolutely fine though and no where near as uncomfortable as a smear test. All the best and looking foward to your update!
