Sorry to be posting here and not the TTC boards but I thought I might get a broader spectrum of answers here.
H and I have been TTC for 12 loooong months now and my cycle length is unpredictable unfortunately plus I've been known to surge once or twice before I actually ov. In the main I have the same pattern pre and post ov - lots of CM, positive OPK and post ov I get the peak in temp plus sore breasts (assumed from the hormonal shift) until my period starts. The day my temp drops pre my period my breasts instantly stop being sore. It's been clockwork in that respect. So last week I got two positive OPKs in a row, lots of CM and abodminal cramps. My breasts have been agony since then but I've not had a temp rise.
I just wondered if anyone had a possible theory? Is it possible that a surge produced enough progesterone to cause the breast pain but no egg was realised? Is is possible to ov but not see a temp rise on rare occasions? I do tend tosleep with my mouth open at the moment due to jaw problems so might this reduce my temp? I realise I just need to ride things out this cycle but it's confused me somewhat so I thought I'd see what others thought!

Yes, it is possible for you to have the surge and all the signs, but not actually ov - it may still be on it's way though. Were you under any sort of stress at the time, as that can delay it?

I did do the temping thing a little bit (am by no means an expert though!) but yes, you can have all the signs of impending OV but not actually OV. I had this once, where I was approaching OV time and got all the symptoms, including +ve opks but then never actually OV'd. Then all the signs started up about a week later and I OV'd about 10 days late. Looking back, I was quite stressed at work the first time so I blamed it on that!
Does your temp normally show a big peak immediately after OV? I've heard that sometimes it can creep up more gradually rather than a steep rise so it might not be obvious on your chart immediately?

It's happened on previous cycles that it's looked like I'm going to ov but then not and it's happened a week later. It's the fact that my boobs are agony and they are only ever normally sore once the hormonal shift has occured post ov. I usually do have a temp spike but there's no real pattern to it at the moment but it's certainly below 36.5.
I wondered if anyone who has temped in the past has experienced ov but not had a temp rise or if that's just unfeasible? It's all very frustrating especially when we've been trying for so long and my cycles can be 40+ days.

I haven't much advice, but you'd be such a good candidate for clomid SP. It tends to work really well for ladies with cycles that are bit long and unpredictable, just gives everything a kick into action rather than dilly dallying up until Ov. You'd ovulate sooner and most likely become more regular.
But I know that wasn't the question you asked!
Hope youre feeling happier today chickadee :-) x

Thanks duckster. I didn't even think about that. I take it H would need to have SA results back before the doc would consider this? Also is it true that H needs to have his swimmers tested three times? Feelings lots better today thanks xxx

He would probably need to have one lot of test results back first. If the SA shows significant problems (and I hope it doesn't!) then clomid may well be fruitless if his swimmers aren't good enough for the job. So yes, they like to check the swimmers first.
They say one sample isn't always conclusive as lifestyle can influence the quality, so like to do a second one 3 months later, but you may be able to get started or referred in the meantime. I haven't heard of three being required, but this may vary from area to area.
One lady on DTC, her husband had a morphology (properly formed) of 1% and they like 4% minimum. At his next test a few weeks later he had 10% morphology! So his swimmers were just having a bad day at the first test. Mr Ducky's are consistently rather rubbish which is why we weren't offered more clomid or other ovulation-boosting drugs.
Wow I can ramble!

Cool thanks Ducky. Your ramblings are appreciated! H has his appointment next week so we'll see what comes out of that.
