I'm not sure if I should be posting here or on OT, it is about my baby, but she's 4.
So, M is in reception. she's really bright (she often answers her older sisters home work questions before her, especially in Maths). Her teacher just stopped me and asked me to come into school for a chat on Monday. She is concerned that M isn't making the progress she should be in her reading, and that there are some "barriers to her learning". My heart is in my stomach. What does it mean?

Don't panic - there are many things that she could mean and most of them are very simple to address. Without knowing what the teacher is particularly concerned about, it's really impossible to give any advice but try not to worry too much, the teacher is donig the right thing by asking you in to discuss it - do let me know what she says at the meeting and I'll try to offer my advice, as will lots of others x

How is her reading at home? Is she reading the correct level books for her age?
Just because she is bright, it still means she may have her weaknesses, I think all children do. With regards to the problems with reading, she could be bored and not challenged enough, or maybe dyslexic (I don't know if she is too young to show that) and the teacher is being proactive about overcoming any 'barriers.'
Try and think of it positively, whatever the teacher thinks is up, they are addressing it to hopefully allow your daughter to achieve her potential.

Dyslexia usually isn't diagnosed until at least age 7 as too many of the signs of dyslexia can be confused with general child development before that. As you say Giddy, she is only 4 and in my experience some children are faster learners in some areas than others. What do you think of her reading? Is she making progress? What about her vision - has she had a recent eye test? A number of our reception age children have recently got glasses which has made the world of difference to some of them so it's a good thing to rule out.

Thank you so much. I am really pleased that the teacher has picked something up, A wears glasses, but M has never had a test, I'll go and book one now. Feeling guilty for not doing so before.
To be honest I don't do masses of homework with her. It was such a battle field with A that I haven't forced it on M. She knows all of her phonic sounds. She knows the keywords she has been set bar one or two. When we read if there are words she doesn't know she can segment the sounds, but doesn't blend them often (hope that's the right terminology). I'm going out now, but will be back on later. I appreciate your replies.

Back from shopping - an eye test sounds like a good plan to begin with. If blending is the issue, then it might be that some 1:1 or small group stuff at school is the way forward, and the school can share strategies with you so you can do the same at home. Let us know how it goes on Monday x

It may even be something like your daughter not being willing to settle to read when she should be. This was raised about my daughter in Reception - we were told that sometimes she would just say 'no I don't want to ' when asked to do something. So she was spending the time that she should be doing the activity arguing about whether she should do it.
I said that that sounded like my daughter and we did tell her that she had to do as she was asked. At home we often had to use reverse psychology to get her to do things (by telling her she wasn't allowed to do something we wanted her to do) but that's not a technique a teacher can use all the time

Oh cedar that's funny! It did say in her reading record this week "M read beautifully, if a little quietly" so maybe she's refusing to speak!

Google the top 100 high frequency words. That should give you an idea of words. Also read her books. Half the battle is her understanding books. Ask her questions about the books. This will really help the comprehension side of it.
