Just wondering at what point did you tell school or do you intend to tell school?

I am 8+1 and have a residential in 3 weeks (after SATS!!!!!!) And have decided that it could cause all sorts of trouble if I tell school, they would probably say don't go. So think I will tell my friend who is the first aider just in case. I don't intend to do anything like rock climbing etc!! We are off for a week after that and I have a scan in that week so was going to tell school the week we get back making me around 12-13 weeks? Did anyone wait longer that this and also when did you tell the children?

Hi im a primary school teacher, i told my head pretty much straight away for docs appointments n stuff....didnt feel the need not to tell her really. I didnt tell anyone else in school (apart from year group partner) until my 12wk scan...thats when i told children too.

If ur going on a residential i would probably inform ur head as u are better off having a risk assessment done for being pregnant on physical activities....its up to u tho hon, whatever u feel comfortable with. Suppose it depends on ur relationship with ur head/school???

Mine were fine with me telling them early plus i didnt feel like i was 'skiving' when i went for all my appointments hehee

I told my deputy head when I was about 8 weeks, just because I was worried that if anyone was sick at school - German Measels type thing, that I should be kept away from them and also if I fell down the stairs or something, someone would know that I was pregnant. I didn't tell my head until I needed time off work for my scan. I would say it's worth telling someone especially for the trip. As long as your safe on the trip I'm sure it's fine.

The kids started to notice and ask just after Easter hols, I didn't tell them just let them ask...bless them, there was lots of "miss, I don't mean to be rude, but can I ask you a personal question..."

    Hi,

I'm a teacher gatecrashing from baby. Congratulations!! I wouldn't say anything yet even though you have the residential, as you say, as long as you don't do any rock climbing or anything too physical you'll be fine.

With both my pregnancies I told the head after my 12 week scan, you don't officially have to tell them this early but by this point I was dying to tell everyone! It also helps with appointments etc if they know, as you know our job is one you need cover to be planned for.

I didn't actually tell the children until after my 20 week scan both times, I teach year 6 and only a few of them had actually guessed even though I had a bump by then. A few told me they thought I had just put on weight!! I just didn't want to tell them too early I think even though I knew everything was fine after the 12 week scan I always had the 'what ifs' in my mind and wanted to have the 20 week scan done before telling the kids.

    Congratulations again!!

    xx

yeah i forgot about telling someone for virus reason...when i was 11wks there was a case of 'slapped cheek' (parovirus) in school which is not dangerous for others but is for pregnant women. I had to stay off for 2wks till the threat was gone. x

hi gatecrashing from ttc. when i was pg i told the assistant head teacher in charge of health and safety in school, as she sorts out the risk assessments. i told her very early at 5 weeks as i had previously had a chem preg. also because the school is getting rough and i dont always feel safe. especially not on bus duty where the kids just barge past. anyhoo, she said we'd keep it between ourselves until later, but my risk assessment was done straight away.

I told my SMT straight away, as I knew I looked like death and kept having to run out of lessons for a wee, leaving my poor TAs in charge! They've been great, they said they could always help deflect anyone saying I was acting oddly or not pulling my weight, and then when I had to have a week off and a trip to A&E they were amazing. My headteacher got me straight to hospital, no fussing, and when other members of staff were worried about me she really played it down, which was exactly what I wanted. Lucky there was a nasty sickness bug going round at the same time really!
I think when you tell them is very much up to you, but I don't think they can take you off a residential just because you're pregnant. It might be best if they knew just in case, especially if (god forbid) you had a problem while you were away. It's completely up to you, hon, but it might be better to give them chance to do a risk assessment. x

Hey. I told my head straight away (about 5 weeks) as well as my TA as I had fainted on the day I found out and had to go to hospital for heart tests. I felt my head should know why, and my TA in case something happened while I was in class. Then I found out it was twins and thats when I started telling everyone else...although the whole staff werent officially told until I was 12 weeks and had had the 12 weeks scan (the twin one was at 10 weeks private). I am now 14 + 3 and am currently off work due to bleeding. My head knew about my previous mc (Jan) and didnt want to put me at risk at all. With it being twins, hes being extra careful (he has twin girls who are now 23!). Im not allowed to teach PE when I go back and have a full time TA in my class all the time! I think its a bit OTT but im not complaining. Although, I am PE co-ordinator which is a bugger but never mind. I think as long as someone on the residential knows, you should be fine. I have a risk assessment which was done straight away. The school will need to do this when they find out but there is no need to tell them until 15 weeks before your due date I think.
