If you currently use this method of contraception, or have done in the past, would you mind answering a couple of questions for me? I'm looking to hear others' experiences of this.
1. Have/did you have any irregular bleeding whilst on it?
2. Have/did your periods completely stop whilst on it?
3. Was there any weight gain?
4. How long did it take for AF to return after stopping using it?
5. Did you have any problems conceiving after stopping using it?

Hi, yes I was on it for about 7 years. I only had spotting whilst on it at the start and then nothing, definitely never a full on period. Definitely had weight gain and normally I could shift weight quite easily but whilst on depo it was near impossible despite exercising and eating well. Took 3 months for a period after stopping and I know this sounds dramatic but I really was so low when my period did arrive, my mood was terrible and the period cramp agony, but it only lasted that one period so was like 7 years of PMT all at once. After that period my cycles were all over the place and would range from bleeding every 12 days to 90 days. It took a year for a normal cycle and after that it averaged around 33 days give it take a bit. Yes took me a year to conceive and even after that miscarriage I still didn't ovulate every month so I'm sure it affected my fertility. I will never go on depo again but it worked well for me in the 7 years so I am grateful for that but I was never told of the risks that your fertility could take 2 years to return or the risk of brittle bone disease so when I needed a bone density scan after 5 years I was shocked. X

I used it for several years (as I can't take the Pill) a long while back and can answer some of your Qs!
1/2) No bleeding or periods whatsoever.
3) No weight gain for me.
4/5) I can't recall exactly but I do remember it was quite quick for AF to reappear (I was surprised as I had heard it can take a while). I wasn't TTC when I stopped it but I can comment is that it hasn't caused any long term problems in that direction as I'm expecting now.
However, I will say that I didn't enjoy the way I 'felt' when on it...a bit like a zombie?! Although the convenience of no periods was great I had zero sex drive etc and eventually swapped to a copper coil, which I was much happier with as I prefer my own hormones. Don't let me put you off though, as everyone's different! Hope that helps :-)

1. Have/did you have any irregular bleeding whilst on it? I didn't bleed AT ALL from the first injection.
2. Have/did your periods completely stop whilst on it? (see above)
3. Was there any weight gain? (a little - maybe 4-6lbs)
4. How long did it take for AF to return after stopping using it? It took a long time compared to the pill, about 6/7 months IIRC.
5. Did you have any problems conceiving after stopping using it? Nope, we started TTCing on holiday in September and conceived on that holiday. (And TMI, in reality only three days of trying)

These replies are more positive than I was expecting actually!
TP - the nurse did mention that it could affect fertility for up to 2 years but that everyone is different. I suppose I'd at least be able to make an informed decision. When I'm not on the pill my cycles range from 28 days to anything up to 50 so that wouldn't really be unusual for me. I don't know what 'normal' is lol.
Gopher - do you mind me asking how long it was in between you stopping the injection and then TTC ?
Rusty - I've read that 5-8lbs is the average weight gain so I could probably handle that. It's great to hear that you conceived quickly despite AF taking a while to show.

No problem. It was about 7 years I think between stopping Depo and TTC, so quite a while. I fell pregnant in my 2nd cycle of trying, so evidently any effects had long worn off!

I think that's why I'm annoyed about depo because my decision was never informed as they didn't provide any info on the negative side effects. I went to the clinic to discuss all options and went with depo so didnt go away again and do my own research sadly. Everyone is so different though that what works for one might not work for everyone so its a hard decision to make I think. X

TP, I'd have been annoyed too. They certainly should have given you all the facts. I think my stalling block at the moment is the fact that I really can't seem to decide when to go for #2.

I've had it twice in my lifetime. First at 18ish for about 18 months, then again at 26 for about 16 months again? I never had any bleeding. Period didn't return straight away (ie within a month of it wearing off) and so second time I took the pill to bring them back. I took the pill from October until June, came off for TTC and fell first month.
I never really gained any weight that I can tell? My life was all up and down both times when I was on it, so I lost and gained weight from that really.
I did love taking it as no periods was great. I didn't realise the ttc effects, but I suppose I wasn't ever on it long enough to affect me. I'd certainly have it again, although I expect I will be on the pill after #2 and then when they are a year or so old my hubby will be snipped!
