im 9 weeks pregnant today with second pregnancy (had previous msc at 9 weeks in jan) and I have had morning sickness since 5 weeks. I’m a hairdresser so first few weeks of morning sickness was quite tough as being on your feet 10 hours a day and having your hairdryer on constantly is not ideal when you’re feeling sick but the last week or so has been absolutely awful. Couldn’t finish a day at work and got to the point I couldn’t actually walk to work without extreme nausea or sickness. I can’t eat until afternoon otherwise it comes straight back up so avoid eating until tea time but means I have no energy whatsoever! Friday was really bad day after 2 clients I couldnt continue so went to see gp who gave me anti sickness medication. Spent past 3 days resting and tablets settled my stomach so managed to eat as normal!! Until this morning when I got up early to go back to work and really struggled getting ready and again by the time I walked to work I was sick. my midwife recommended bed rest so I have got sick note for a week to rest but I’m worried next week I will still be the same!
has anyone suffered similar or have tips on how I can get myself back to work? I’m trying to take it easy and listen to my body after last time but I’m worried I might feel like this for the whole pregnancy!!

have you spoken with your doctor about any sickness Tablets? I found that taking them as soon as I woke up half an hour before eating anything really helped and then take them when instructed throughout the day. I had really bad HG and did have to get hospitalised because I was so dehydrated but was given a anti sickness jag which lasted around 5 days and really helped with the nausea although didnt fully take it away. I also bought sea bands, you can get them on eBay really cheap. I were them 24/7 and still wear them now at 20 weeks because I’m too scared that if I stop wearing them I’ll start being sick again🙈 hope this helps x

Hi whitecross, sorry to hear you are going through this. Im now 22 weeks and first started vomiting just before 6 weeks. I tried fighting it for a couple of weeks as it seems you are but then it just got too much and I ended up off work for 10 weeks or so as was too ill to leave the house and couldn’t eat, drink or be around food. I even ended up in hospital for three days at its worst. It feels so utterly unfair and as though everyone around you is telling you how fantastic they feel/felt in pregnancy. I’ve never felt so horrendous in my life. It’s been far from ideal as I don’t get paid time off in my work (guessing it may be the same for you but know all hairdressers are dif) so its been pretty bad for us financially. But We just had to accept the situation as had no way around it and are trying to play catch up as best we can. At around 14 weeks it started to lift a bit and I had a few more normal moments and could eat more. At 20 weeks there was another big shift and I now feel SO much better and am working part time again now and can cook in the house again. I pushed it too hard the week before last and was sick 4 times last week but all in all I feel a lot more normal now. My mum said the sickness didn’t fully stop for her until she’d given birth so I’m prepared that may be the case for me, but she said that it meant the sleepless nights were so much more manageable as she felt more well than she had in months so I’m clinging on to that silver lining! I’d say the things that helped me most were knowing people cared (unfortunately most my friends were rubbish but had a couple who were lifesavers!) and talking to others going through the same thing. i vaguely knew of someone also suffering so we started messaging and it kept me going. Also there’s a website called pregnancy sickness support. I never actually posted on their forums but reading other people’s posts made me feel less alone. Hope you start feeling better soon, and in the meantime don’t be too hard on yourself xx

I can't profess to have struggled as much as you guys have but as well as the anti sickness bands you can wear, I also found that if I had a small thing to eat first thing before getting out of bed (think plain cracker or biscuit) my stomach actually settled more than not eating. Getting up too quickly made the sickness much worse.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I started taking anti sickness meds on Friday but doc recommended taking them before bed as they are very drowsy - which I discovered sat afternoon after taking one in the hope of easing nausea and woke up 4 hours later lol. Sickness meds only seemed to help on the days I wasn’t at work today I felt straight back to square 1! If I can have a lie in and gradually start my day I find it a lot easier to cope with the nausea than when I have to get up for work - I dont actually vomit unless I rush around during the nausea which always seems to be when I’m getting ready for work or at work so I start the day feeling pretty rough. I’m worried that I find it easier to deal with if I avoid eating/drinking as I know this is so bad for my body!

Just wanted to thank you for your recommendation of sea bands! My OH got them today and I instantly felt the nausea ease! I actually ate lunch for the first time in days!!! I’m going to try using them to settle me enough to keep food down and try get my energy and sugar levels back up over the next few days! Thank you again and I hope you manage your second half of pregnancy a bit easier than the first!! It’s the most amazing gift to be pregnant it’s a shame it’s so unpleasant lol! X
