    Hi all,

I have been thinking about slings, and although I am going to a sling meet, I wondered what you girls had found out about the comparison of slings to the more traditional through the legs carriers (babybjorn) I remember hearing that it was dangerous to have a through the legs carrier because of the pressure it puts on that area...infertility etc etc, but can't find any actual info.....what are your feelings/finding?

    Thanks x x x x

Gatecrashing, but you are more than welcome to my opinion  I've tried quite a few carriers/slings with my two. Personally I don't like the carriers like the Baby Bjorn. I'm not convinced they are comfy for lo and I certainly didn't find them comfy for me, they gave me back ache pretty quickly. When mine were small I used a sling (from www.freedomslings.co.uk) which I liked a lot, but I did find that as they got bigger I was getting back ache again as a lot of the weight is on one shoulder with a sling. After that I tried a Mei tai, which is a traditional asian soft carrier and they are absolutely fantastic. My lo's are now 33lb and 25lb and I use it for both of them with no back ache at all, even if they are in there hours. They are really versatile and can be used on your front from birth but also on your hip or back for older babies. They obvioulsy can't tell me, but I think they are the comfiest for the baby as well. When they are in the carrier properly they sit right down in it, with their kness higher than their bums, so all the weight is on their bottoms not their crotch like in a Baby Bjorn, and I think that has to be comfier! I was so impressed that I actually started making them to sell, if you want to have a look at the ones I make let me know and I'll give you the website.

I've had the babasling and the premaxx baby bag and hate them both! I have a baby bjorn and use it loads, although it makes my back ache even with Lily in and shes tiny. I dont know if it was just that Lily was too small for the bags though, shes not even 7lb yet so might try her again when shes bigger.

 No! The straps don't really slip so once they're tied they stay tied. I know it looks a bit like they could slide out the bottom, but the fabric is actually sort of folded under them so the only way they could fall out is if the waist strap actually came undone.

The baby Bjorn is worth the extra money for sure. Its secure and can hold the lo facing or away from you. It depends on you and your lo I think as both are fine in the long run, but depends on what suits you both x

Hi all, sorry but gatecrashing from due in November! I'm on the look out for a sling & the Mei Tai ones look gorgeous & really comfy, so have bookmarked the site - thanks Bedhead!

It's really difficult trying to think now what it'll be like when baby's here, (especially as this is my first!) but those slings seem to hold baby in a really comfy way, so will look into it again nearer the time.

    Interesting opinions & really helpful!

    Thank you,

The web adddress for those that are intrested is www.mooboocarriers.co.uk The site actually needs updating as I have a lot of new fabrics, so if you like the idea, but not the fabrics let me know as I may well have something you do like.

    Hi all, interesting stuff.

Thanks for the help. I think Im going to stick with a sling...the crotch thing bothers me!

For those that are interested, the sling meets that I was talking about take place all over teh country and you can meet with other mums and try out all different types of slings...very handy!

I have and love both (sling and BabyBjorn).

The sling was useful whilst Lily was tiny and wanted cuddles but I needed to do things that required both hands, eg. housework. She was comforted by being so close and normally fell asleep as soon as I put her in it. Once she got past about 14 weeks I found she didn't seem comfortable any more, and anyway she was starting to get too heavy for it (it dug in the shoulder). I only used the sling in the house.

She's now 7 months and 15lbs+ and I still use the BabyBjorn for walks round to the local shops etc. I had a Tomy carrier before and agree with the others who say that the BabyBjorn is definitely worth paying the extra for - it's really simple and comfortable in comparison.

As for baby slipping and falling out (of either sling or carrier) - it's just not an issue, they're both very secure. And the crotch thing - never heard of it, people have been using them for years without issues. Just me, but I think that sounds like scaremongering.

I'd recommend both, but I've definitely got most use out of the BabyBjorn.

I used the babasling when my ds was very young and it was great but now that he's 8 months and 22lbs the babasling is too uncomfy for me so I use a wrap sling. I got it from www.sabebabywear.com you have to learn how to wrap it but once you get the hang of it it's really comfy for the both of us. I've got a tomy carrier but never really got on with it!

I was asking myself the same thing - what to go for!

Our friends came over and they had a sleepy wrap.

It was AMAZING!! It basically looked like a really long scarf and there are various ways of tying it, so you can carry your bubba in different ways! Your arms are completely free and the weight can be distributed across the shoulders and back.

It carries from newborn until early toddler and looked more like a fashion item than bulky carrier.

They come in all different colours and are around ??35-??40 on ebay or amazon.

That's what we are going to go for!

I have got a freedom sling which i love but my lo is only 11 weeks old and is aready getting very heavy and giving me back ache. I would LOVE a mei tai now i think the baby's weight would be easier to carry over both shoulders.
And i found this on the net-
In a mei tai the babys knees are higher than the hips in a sitting position, which better promotes spine and hip development.
I just wish i could afford one!
Bedheads are the cheapest around (i've looked) and they are really nice. I love the giraffe.
