I've bought a baby monitor which has a sensor mat and audio only.
I know there are ones that have video also - is this a useful thing or not??? I'm considering changing but not sure if its an extra expense that isn't necessary??
Can anyone give any advice/experiences that might help?

I had the angelcare sensor and sound mat first and whilst he was in with us that was fine, but when he moved into his own room I wanted to be able to see him so I could see if his noise was a sleep noise or he was actually awake and I had to go in so we bought the angelcare video. Im so glad we did, it's a great piece of mind to be able to see him without disturbing him!

We've bought a video with sensor. My friends said their video monitor was the best thing they bought, but I wanted a sensor so I was very happy when I realised they did both.
It'll be a bit of a pain to return and a video isn't necessary at all, just an extra tool I think. My friends made the comparison that with the video you can see if the cry/moan is genuine I.e. They are moving, pulled themselves up etc or if they look like they will be able to go back to sleep.

Before we had our monitor, I insisted I didn't want a video one as I thought I'd be watching it all the time. We got given one as a present and I didn't like to take it back. There was only one night that I constantly watched it and that was the first night we put her upstairs to sleep alone. S went through a period of rolling onto her front and not being able to get back so she'd cry until we turned her over. If she cried, we'd look at the monitor and know whether she was just having a whinge and would settle herself, or if she was on her front and needed to be turned over.

We have a video one that we were given and as others have said we weren't going to get one but found it really useful to see if k was having a wiggle and moan in her sleep or if she was awake.

We have one but obv not using it yet. I got it on the advice of a good friend with 2 children who said the video was great for being able to assess whether the child was likely to have a grumble and go back to sleep or whether they were standing up and full on unsettled! Funnily enough we haven't used the movement pad at all and I thought I'd really want to! Sleeping in the same room as F is like sleeping in the zoo he's so noisy!!

We had a video one, but not sensor mat, with Zoe. Her room was on the floor above us so I wanted to be able to see if she was crying because she was awake or crying because she has got her arms stuck through the cot to know how fast to run up the stairs. It was good and actually we used it right up until we moved house so we could keep an eye on her if she was playing in her room (aged 5).
We don't have a monitor yet for Orla. I'm not sure we will bother tbh.
I woudln't rush out and buy anything just yet. Baby will be in with you for the first 6mths presumably, and all sleeps are meant to be with you, so you won't have any need then and you will know more about what features are importatant to you when you actually need it. For example, with a sensor mat Orla now at 8mths rolls all over the cot so it would be forever going off.

We've got the audio and sensor mat and haven't used the sensor mat yet (to be fair we don't leave him to sleep but it's handy if I want to have a quick shower and he's snoozing) But I thought we'd be using the mat by now. To be honest I wish we'd just got a video monitor but I may feel differently when he's in his own room I suppose.

I've got the video and sensor mat. I think if was because O was so small but I constantly Panicked that he wasn't breathing, I doubt I would have got a wink of sleep those first couple of weeks without the sensor mat on. We have it in O's crib and use it every night and have done since he was born. I now use the video part too, I put O down for a nap in the morning and I nip in the shower in our ensuite. I put the camera part on, the sensor mat on and obviously the sounds and take the parent part into the bathroom, I can see if he's stirring, I know he's fine as the mat is on and I can hear when he starts stirring about.
I think it's brilliant and I will 100% use it when O goes into his own room, it will stop me going in and out every 2 mins as I can see if he's actually awake or just having a stir and a moan!

We had the movment sensor mat and audio, it is more than adequate IMO for the first 6 months disco was in with us for naps and night sleeps and after 6 months noise wise we are pretty sussed if we need to go in or if he is just grumbling and will settel without us.
