As you may have seen, we are holding a live web chat with La Leche League, the Breastfeeding Support Charity, next Wednesday. As well as sharing support and advice about breastfeeding I thought it would be valuable to set up two additional threads next week for forum members to share their support, advice and top tips on bottle feeding (what equipment do you need, can you make formula up in advance etc. etc.) and mixed feeding (is it possible to breastfeed and bottle feed successfully etc.).
If there are members with experience of either of these topics that would like to start the conversations next week that would be great. If not, I wondered if they could be your 'Topics of the week' and Counter could kick them off for us?
I plan to create community top tips articles from the content of these threads, similar in nature to the BLW and Cloth Nappy articles.

I'd be happy to contribute in respect of bottle feeding. I found that there was so much information online about breast feeding, but nowhere to find guidance about bottle feeding,

Great - thanks Knees. Would you be happy to start a Bottle Feeding thread next Monday with your experience and tips and then others can ask questions / add their advice?

Yes, of course.

Thank you knees will be great to have someone to ask questions to I dont want to breastfeed and sometimes I feel bad about it because everyone on here always talks about it and not much about bottle feeding....but I never have wanted too breastfeed.

I'm happy to contribute to the bottle feeding thread.

Great idea. I formula feed and I found it tricky to find good information online. I know it's because it's not supposed to be promoted, but from my NCT class those who breastfeed have all given their baby at least one bottle of formula at some point so the lack of accurate information out there is frustrating.

I breastfed my son and hope to do the same for my daughter, but wanted to say what a great idea. Lovely to see the forums supporting all mothers x

I'm FF so happy to contribute. I also found myself scouring the Internet for info and I have to say most of what I eventually found was from other forums like MD rather than a designated site.

My son was a prem, he was feed nasogastically. Then he was cup feed/ mixed fed until he was six monthes old. I am happy to contribute if it is not during the working day.

When you're talking about bottle feeding are you talking about formula feeding in bottles or expressed breast milk as well? I found it really hard to do expressed bottles & am happy to share what I learnt (although that might be part of the breast feeding LLL talk.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Winterflower - would you be happy to start a thread next Monday about Mixed Feeding? It doesn't need to be started during the working day.
BK - good question. I think it's relevant to both conversations. So maybe you could add a question to the LLL web chat thread about why you found it hard to do expressed bottles and whether they have advice for other mothers in a similar position, but also contribute to the bottle feeding thread?

Can we be really careful with the bottle feeding thread to keep it to the official guidance as much as possible? Especially if this is going to form the basis of an article. It might be pendantic but I really hate the idea of any child being put at risk. We all take decisions to treat the guidelines differently but can we make sure we start with the guidelines and why they are in place and then follow on with making our own decisions about how we treta them. I hope this makes sense!

Fab idea Sarah.

QI do you mean in terms of making/storing bottles? If so, I completely agree as I've read some postsi on other forums that have worried me regarding how some people clean bottles, make formula etc. It's one of the reasons I think the lack of information out there is dangerous because people could be putting their LO's health at risk.
05/06/2014 at 08:56
Ok Sarah I will start a thread on mixed feeding on Monday
05/06/2014 at 09:31
QI - I will ensure the guidelines are stated, but I will also share my experiences because I don't know one person who has actually stuck to the official guidelines as they just aren't practical.
05/06/2014 at 09:37
I think it's helpful for everyone to share their own experiences in the context of a forum conversation, but I will ensure that the guidelines are clearly stated in the Community Top Tips article and will be very careful about what we are recommending. It would be great if you could contribute your experiences too QI.
