Zach is draining my boobs at every feed and still wants more, he soon calms down until the next feed 3 hrs later. I am strugglung to pump any extra milk out as a result. I started the mini pill 4 weeks ago but nothing else has changed...
I'm not ready to give it up yet, but do I need to think about topping him up with formula?

There's a growth spurt around 12 weeks, could well be that - stick at it and keep feeding, it should settle soon x

If you WANT to give some formula then do so, but if you keep popping him on continually your boobs will catch up with his hunger soon enough and produce more for him. Night-time feeds are the critical ones I seem to remember to get milk production geared up for the next day x

If he calms down for the next feed then he can't be overly hungry so probably doesn't need formula. He'll be getting your supply up if hes pulling, getting demanding during that feed. But going three hours is a good gap. My daughter used to feed for ages in the afternoon at about that age (she was mixed fed). In my experience (of only one baby) swapping a whole feed for formula seemed to work best. But if you want to keep on BF you need to feed through the growth spurts primarily BFing.

exactly whar Margot and AP said, at the same age disco was still feeding more frequently than every 3 hours, are you expressing for something specific? I found feeding on 1 sid only at night (if possible) and first thing in the am meant I could express from the full side in the morning. However disco usually only need one boob per feed so guessing that may not be practical if Z is needing both at every feed.

Thanks ladies. I managed 4.5 oz which he'll guzzle. E slept through for two nights and H gave me a sleep in the other day so I suppose the demand lowered for a few days. I'll keep feeding him. Like I say, I'm not ready to give it up yet up hate him seeing him unsatisfied.

What Margot Said
Keep at it and your boobs will sort themselves out. No need for formula top ups x

We went through this so often with Michael, I usually put it down to a GS. It's tiring isn't it?! If you introduce formula, your supply won't keep up with his demands BUT he'll be fuller and you'll know how much he is getting. It is entirely up to you but I have found that formula has messed up BFing for me.

R is 16 weeks and doesn't go 3 hours between feeds that often - i just feed him when he wants it - its the best way to keep your supply up - boobs are, after all, supply and demand led, really you need to feed to keep up with GS's etc hard as it is.
