im booked for a c section at 38 wks and my consultant told me i'd have to have 2 steroid injections to help mature the baby's lungs. I never had this with my first daughter who was born via c section at 38 wks only 3 years ago and she was fine. Im told its 'guidelines' now but im still not sure; i thought a baby was full term at 38 wks, iv been given no info on side affects for me or baby, what kind of steroid etc i was just told you should have them as not having them could be traumatic, way to scare me thanks! Have any of you been told this lately? im obviously going to look into it more but wanted to ask you too. thanks

Hi Billie, thanks for posting me i really appreciate your advice, your right babs is worth everything i can do its just steroids sounds a bit scary, the hospital didn't give any information which i think made me worry more.

How very bizarre as technically baby is 'full term' from 37wks...I wonder whether they would do similar if baby was to arrive via vaginal birth or is it purely because they are delivered c-sec?

Rachael The hospital didn't give me loads of info i just had a friend who was training to be a midwife helped me loads i think its only more c-sec deliveries as because they are sunroof del they aren't squeezed through the birth canal so the steriods help dry the lungs so its more to avoid problems rather than cure if that makes sense they are normally either 12 hours apart or 24 hours apart think they only give if a v delivery if they either think u will deliver early or they have to induce u early try not to worry my son was fine ru due soon?

im not booked in until 21 oct so a bit off yet, iv talked to a lot of people about it and they have said very similar to you and KazzieM, the more i hear about it i feel a bit better about it all. I wish NHS would make its mind up on these things so much changes minute by minute. I also thought a baby was full term at 37 wks so thought lungs would be mature by then and the thing about baby coming vaginally and this helping the lungs clear etc i keep hearing. When holly was born by c section electively she came out screaming her head off she was starving as id had to starve because of hte c section so by the time i was up on the ward at 11.30 she was creating wholly heck we couldn't get a bottle quick enough to her - hense nothing wrong with her lungs . I think i will end up having the steroids because not having them and something being wrong with baby would cause so much guilt i don't think i could cope with that. x
