We fly to France next Saturday and I can't decide what to do. To hire car seats for both kids would come to 60 euros and obviously we wouldn't know the history etc plus there's a note on the website saying that most car hire companies won't fit the car seats, this is down to the parents. Do we really want to arrive in France with 2 small kids in tow and grapple with unknown car seats before negoatiating our way out of a totally unfamiliar place? We can take the car seats with us free of charge but then I'm envisaging us arriving like pack horses with 2 suitcases, 2 kids, small amount of hand luggage, pushchair and 2 car seats and I'm not sure what would be preferable. Just wondered what other people have done in this situation?

Hi Ally, how old are they? We bought a bubblebutt which is an inflatable booster seat when we last went abroad and it was great . It's only from a certain weight though. You can get them from kiddicare. They pack down quite small and are really easy to pop up. The time before that, we hired one. It wasn't great and I'm not sure it was the right size for his age, so not ideal and in hindsight taking ours would have been preferable. Maybe you could get away with one car seat and one bubblebutt??
Sorry, it's called bubblebum.

We always hire car seats, mainly laziness really as there would be so much to carry but I can see why people prefer to take their own. We have never had a problem fitting them ourselves, just make sure the one you are given is in good condition and age/size appropriate.

Thanks MrsBubble, they're 5 and 18 months. Will take a look at the Bubble Bum x

It would be fine for the 5 year old, but I think your 18 month old would be too small. Have a fab holiday x

We always hire.
No way would I increase my luggage with car seats!!

Distances for what? Carrying luggage or driving from the airport? We got a taxi from CDG to the city centre, it took us maybe 20 minutes but French drivers are mental, they just fly in and out and do what they like!

Am beginning to feel that way too Hepburn!
Lindbtbunny, I mean distances between car hire desk and rental car etc. Thankfully we're not heading in to Paris itself!

We hired seats in America. A was 6 weeks old so it was an intact carrier, slightly old fashioned but as new condition. Had the fitting instructions with it so was easy. It didn't have a head hugger though, so I asked about that and they had one delivered to our hotel the next day (and took mine off the pushchair to use to get to the hotel)
I wouldn't consider taking seats, would hire again.

We hire, well actually we only ever go to visit FIL and he borrows one from a fellow grandparent friend, I don't want to risk my one getting lost or damaged during transit. I'd hire them in your shoes.

We hire - I am always concerned as to how carefully they are treated when they go in the plane as hold luggage
