    Hello ladies!!

I only found out I was pregnant last and am over the moon.

Today, a coldsore appeared on my lip from no where, I have read somewhere that coldsores in pregnant women can be dangerous. Does any one know anything about this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have always suffered with cold sores and have got quite a few more since being pregnant. As far as I'm aware there's no risk to your baby...however you could double check with your mw or gp. TBH though, once the virus is in your system you can't get rid of it anyway so there's not much that can be done.

You may find, like me that you'll get more frequent outbreaks - I think this is due to pregnancy supressing your immune system and also being extra tired just due to baby-making!

Sorry to waffle and not answer...best ask a professional I reckon

Hi my LO is 11+2....I had coldsores alll through my pregnancy.....and used coldsore creams with no problems. I also got one when LO was 2 weeks old...then I freaked as I knew it could be dangerous for newborn. Doctor told me not to kiss a LO on lips (I wouldnt anyway) and as he was BF at the time this should give him enough antibodies. He is fine.

I used to only get about 1 a year.....I have had about 5 this year, I think it is from being run down.....I HATE THEM!!!

    Hi Nicola,

I have had coldsores for years and found I had even more in the early days / weeks of pregnancy. I was using Zovirax until a friend told me I shouldn't whilst pregnant.

The Zovirax website advises against it too so I didn't use it but I am sure it is just to cover their own backs.....!

    Good luck with your pregnancy

    Hi

Just wanted to share this tip with you. I used to suffer from coldsores really bad- they are the worst thing! Anyway my friend suggested taking 1-2 tabs of L-Lysine (herbal supplement) a day as she had found that her coldsores- a) at first didn't last as long b) and she hardly got them. I did this and I haven't had a coldsore in....over a year! You can get them from Holland an Barrett and I only now take 1 tab every 2 days as I have been taking them for a while. I checked with my GP that they were OK to take during pregnancy and also whilst bf (this is my 2nd pregnancy and I bf my daughter) and he said they were fine- it does advise to check with dr on the pack tho.

    Definately worth taking imo!

This is going to be TMI but cold sores oral cold sores are not harmful to the baby. The only thing you want to avoid is your partner giving you oral when you are pregnant and has cold sores and this can give you genital herpes and cause miscarriage.

If you have cold sores during pregnancy, you have to know that there are risks which involve the baby. I read one article at http://www.herpeshunter.com/cold-sore-during-pregnancy.php that the risk of herpes simplex transmission is higher if you catch the virus for the first time at the end of the last trimester. To avoid infection, probably you need to think about caesarian. Neonatal HSV infection is not the only thing you need to worry about. The possibilities of  miscarriage and premature delivery are high if you have cold sores during the early stage of your pregnancy.

I have had cold sores for about 3years now and was not getting any for like 6months at a time. Now that I am pregnant,  I have gotten three In the last two months. Right now I have two huge ones at once. They are bigger than my first outbreak. However the only way to pass herpes is through contact. Kissing for cold sores and sex for genital herpes. You can transfer your cold sores to your partners genitals as well. However, aside from that. Vaginal delivery is not dangerous unless you have genital herpes. You cannot pass your cold sores to baby through Vaginal delivery.
