F is nearly 6 weeks old and EBF up until now. The plan was for him to always be able to take a bottle as we have a couple of weddings this summer plus I'm looking forward to more than one small wine between feeds! For some irrational reason I'm slightly scared of expressing!! more than that I just don't fancy spending precious/limited time between feeds/naps stuck to a breast pump. i'm thinking about using formula - perhaps once a day? I was just wondering if anyone was currently doing this and how it works/how baby has adapted?

I express every morning and if out sometimes take a bottle with me and if i dont need one i add it to my freezer stash. Only takes 10mins in morn. Done the same last time too and it worked well for us.
Formula needs to be used within a certain time limit once opened i think x

Thanks CK. I might try that first. Finding those 10 mins will be my challenge!!

Thanks mrs B! Do you feed expressed or formula milk while expressing?? That is truly a skill to do both simultaneously but a brilliant way to save time!

Zero advice obviously but just wanted to say aptimal (and most others) do little bottles of ready made formula that you can close and store in the fridge for (I'd have to check this!) up to 48hours? So you could go that route rather than open a run of formula as you have to use it within 28days which you wouldn't if you were only doing one feed a day.
We have been mix feeding, he feeds for so long and so frequently that I was struggling. He gets a formula feed during the night either from me or H. It's working for us, it's not ideal but if I wasn't doing that I think we would have went on to formula full time by now.

I mix fed from around 16 weeks. I started giving one bottle a day as I had supply issues and he wasn't getting enough milk. I did express in the early days but it could take half an hour to get 4 or 5 oz and I didn't always have the time to sit and express. You can get smaller tubs of formula so you don't have to worry so much about using a big tub in 4 weeks. I got my pharmacy to order one in for me

R lost a lot of weight in the first few weeks & struggled to get back to birth weight, we had to introduce formula top ups as lo would of ended up in hospital.
I still give R a bottle of formula on an evening, I let her cluster feed until 9pm then I give it her. For some reason my milk is very low on an evening & she won't settle without a bottle, maybe due to the formula top ups when she was younger. Due to us introducing a bottle earlier R will take from breast & bottle easily.
I can only express 3oz max a day, she gets given this when H gets in from work otherwise she will scream if he tries to hold her.
I use aptamil for formula bottle. If you are able to pump though, I sometimes pump when lo is feeding on one side or when she is having the expressed/formula bottle.

Just be careful as if you could reduce your supply if you swap a feed for a bottle of formula without expressing on a regular basis. Expressing really isn't that bad if you have a decent pump or can hand express, i expressed exclusively for 4 months with a 2 1/2 yr old to occupy and managed. Maybe give it a go before buying formula. X

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and for the various pieces of advice. Much appreciated!

I started on a bottle of formula a day at about 16 weeks. It was the last evening feed I swapped. It went well. I didn't notice any reduction in my supply for the rest of his feeds.

I mix fed from about 11 weeks, offering a bottle at night time before bed and it was fine. I then slowly decreased BFing until 4.5 months, working backwards so that eventually the first feed in the morning was the last to go. He did start to get very fussy on the boob once he was having more bottle than noon though. I think it was a combination of preferring the bottle and supply issues.
I always struggled with expressing so formula was a better option for us.

I'm going to try expressing tomorrow morning while H gives him a bottle. If I can do that a couple of times a week and build up a wee supply in the freezer I'll be happy! Thanks all - that's been v helpful!

Thanks PW! The only thing I worry about is supply if I start skipping a feed and replacing it with formula. I think I'll need to try something though as I need him to
take a bottle as we have weddings this summer! He's cluster feeding in the morning so its hard to find the time to express.
Anyhoo, how are you and S doing? Can't believe he's so big now!
