Guess work! I got a couple of types and sizes and used what worked. The medela ones in a small were great and got us through the first 7 weeks until her tongue tie was sorted out.

You might not need them, the bf counsellor gave me mine and most people only need them for nipple trauma caused by tongue ties, so your baby might not even have a TT. As it was I found it such a faff holding it on and found it awkward so Isaac already had his TT snipped so it was a few days and my nips were fine again. Babies don't like them as they have to work harder to get the milk so they are only temporary whilst there's been a lot if trauma. I know some people that's had to use them long term though due to such severe trauma in the first place.

I wouldn't be thinking of nipple shields before you actually need them. I use them long term but they are a hassle.

Yes as the others say, don't bother. I did end up using them for a week or two but my H just went and got some while I was in hospital. He asked "errr... what are they" and the MW took pity on him and said "just go to Boots and ask an assistant for Medela nipple shields size medium"!

The medela ones I bought say to measure the basr of your nipple in millimeters amd then buy according to that...theirs have a size guide on them. But I only used them once her TT had caused me damage amd even then i only used them for a week and they were a real faff!
