Just wondering if it's normal for new borns to have quite sleepy eyes? Sam had quite gunky eyes in hospital, but as he was on anti biotics anyway, they weren't concerned about a possible infection as the anti b's would treat it, and we were just told to bathe them in cooled boiled water, which we've been doing for 2.5 weeks now.
We took him to the GP last week as one eye was red as well and they gave him some eye drops for the infection. Since then, they have been very clear some days but still gunky others, and we have officially finished the course of drops. I've noticed though that they are more gunky - by gunky I mean yellow sleep, sometimes a bit gloopy, after a long sleep or a crying spell and was wondering if this is quite normal, or if I should be taking him back to the GP?
So hard to know what's normal and what's a problem when you have nothing to compare it to!

O had quite gooey eyes to begin with but nothing bad enough for anti b's to be prescribed. The midwife told me to put breast milk on them and it did clear up within a few days.

Ooh hadn't heard of that, thanks HT. Good old breast milk! Did you do this a few times a day? Did you just squeeze a bit on to each eye, as if you were putting drops in? Thanks.

Well at first I used cotton wool soaked in milk and wiped from inside out but soon quit that faff and went straight for the squirt. If you google it there are lots if uses for breast milk, my friends swears by it for nappy rash.

Yes I did the breast milk thing. My daughter had quite gunky eyes and the doc told me to do it. I was suprised but it definitely worked.

A had this until over 4 months, if was never infected just a blocked tear duct. I went to the GP about it a few times who only provided saline nose drops, and assured me it would clear. It did, I'm not sure how as it was the first day/night H looked after him on his own.

Fab, thanks a lot will get squirting him today! Had no idea about breast milk, so glad I asked!

yep Isla had this for the first 4-5 months too. Just a blocked duct. It didn't worry me as I'd seen the midwife and HV about it. My SIL always made a issue of it and kept pointing it out which irratated me somewhat. It cleared up by itself, but even now if she has a cold her eye leaks tears that side.
