Hello all, I haven't been here since Jess was born and I wanted to let people know where we are at!So Jess was born at 35+5 and has always had feeding difficulties, we established by 5 weeks that she had reflux. After going to the gp on 4 separate occasions to be told I was a sleep deprived , neurotic , first time mum I gave up and went to a&e. Once there the paediatrician confirmed reflux and prescribed domperidone and ranitidene for her, Over the weeks Jess continued to gain weight but the drs refused to increase the dosage. After a few weeks the meds started to become less effective. Eventually the domperidone (anti sickness type drug) stopped working . The gp refused to give a repeat prescription of this as guidelines had changed.Jessica's sickness became worse and got to a point where she was so sick, she couldn't take a breath. This led to her choking and turning blue. This happened twice. On the 2nd occasion we took her to a&e. We were admitted for 5 days. It was established that the domperidone should never have been discontinued. She has also since been put on lansoperazole and had her milk changed to neocate and thickened with carobel.Along with these changes we have started cranial osteopathy and can say we have seen big changes in our little girl.
The fact that it took Jess to stop breathing and turn blue to get this treatment is awful.Below is a link to a petition to get gps trained correctly in signs and symptoms of reflux. It is also to stop the bnf guidelines from stopping gps discontinuing certain medications that these children need.
Please can you take a moment and sign the petition for babies like Jess who suffered because of gp's lack of knowledge.
Also a little flash of Jessica!

Fecking hell monnie
My firstborn suffered because of GPs not udnerstanding reflux and dismissing me as a neurotic first time mum (even though I had raised children previously). However when I ahd my second they accepted me sayign she ahd reflux without a second thought as soon as I said the words this sin't my first child...

It's been such a journey, trying to convince them I'm not neurotic but my baby was unwell. T shouldn't have to be this hard

Awful that you've had to watch Jess suffer so much Monnie and that you've had such a fight on your hands. She looks like a happy little soul now, gorgeous girl :) will sign the petition for you now as I've found the care at the hands of gps where reflux is concerned to be very hit and miss and it needs addressing.
Thank you QI, and WH that's fabulous you are very lucky x
thank you pop corn

Signed and shared. It is beyond frustrating that there are these inconsistencies of care particularly for such little ones, I agree more basic knowledge and awareness is needed. My friend had a similar experience to you with her GP and had to go back numerous times, it's awful especially at a very trying time anyway!
