They only have to have you back in exactly the same role if you take 6 months off or less, if you take over that, and up to a year, they have to have you back but can give you any role but with same pay and conditions, and same 'level' I presume. I dont know your intended time off but maybe they have a different role for when you return. I'd send a email to your boss saying youve heard some rumours and could they please clarify?

Thanks porkchop. I'm pretty sure as part of my enhanced maternity package they promise to keep my role for me for a year but I will double check. I wanted to give my boss a chance to contact me but it doesn't look like it's going to happen! I will have to make the first move *sigh*

Sounds a bit like there was scope for a promotion, and I think you're supposed to be kept in the loop of opportunities like that arising whilst on maternity leave:
"If opportunities for promotion or pay increases come up while you are on leave, you should be included (if you aren't it could be sex-discrimination)."

As a rule what Porkchop has said it true, it is very unusual for a company not to have this policy becuase businesses can change so much in the timespan of a year. I would raise your concerns directly with your line manager.
