Warning : This is long as I have written for me to keep!
The short version : Sweep 5pm, contractions started 8pm, got to hospital 3.30am, Iris born 5.12am in the pool using gas & air
Full story :
Having been amidst a race on the forum sweepstake boards as to who would 'pop' first I was rather despondent to be at 40+4 with no imminent signs of labour. Plus the Internet Weirdies pretty much had me down as last through the blocks. I wanted this baby out!
Surely the intermittent pains I had been feeling on and off since Sunday night were moving me along.. You would think the RL Tea, pineapple, curries, Clary Sage, marital unpleasantness, walking or ball bouncing would have worked...? No.
On Wednesday at 40+4 at 5pm enough was enough. I had a sweep by a lovely midwife who described me as 'favorable and stretchy' I was 1.5cm dilated and she predicted when I went into labour I would dilate quickly. She wished me luck and sent me on my way instructing me to sit on my ball all evening.
I bounced. And bounced. And bounced. Mostly with a toddler on my lap. It worked and at around 8pm the pains started up. 4 mins apart but not painful initially, we settled in for a long night as it had taken ages to get anywhere near 4cm last time. However I needed the Tens by midnight and by 1am I'd long since had to ditch the ball in favour of clinging on to a door frame, pains were 3 in 10 minutes and I couldn't speak through them. H called the hospital at about 1.30am who 'suggested' that perhaps it was time to get my parents over to watch the toddler and head in.
My folks arrived at 2.30am and we were in the car by 3.00am (H tells me I was faffing in between contractions so it took me half an hour to get into the car... I think I was worrying that I'd be sent home...) H got us to the hospital in record time and I was contracting in the examination room by 3.30am.
'You're 6cm' I was told 'We're running the pool for you' - Time to have a baby then....
By 4am I'd ditched the tens in favour of Gas and Air and was rather (im)patiently waiting for the pool to reach the right temp. Pressure with every contraction and only getting a minute or so between each one was totally alien to me.
Into the pool at 4.15am ish, lots of 'I can't do this' moans from me with each contraction. My waters still hadn't gone which I was told was increasing the pressure, and I hit the 'wall' not long after getting in the water. But in fact the minute I felt my waters go pop I heard the MW say she could see the head and I went into Auto Pilot mode.
Within a few pushes baby's head was out, complete with hand over its face, staring up at my H from under the water, who had rushed round to the business end for a look. Then with the next contraction out she came and I caught her through my legs.
H announced the sex and we had our first family cuddle. Iris Joan Claire had been born at 5.12am.
The cord was really short so leaving it to pulsate was a bit ouchy as it was really rubbing on my bits(!), but we left it none-the-less. Then Iris went to Daddy and I got my natural 3rd stage and delivered the placenta in the pool about 45 minutes after Iris had arrived, much to the joy of the student midwife who hadn't ever experienced a physiological 3rd stage before and who later told me it was amazing to watch it all be so natural.
Iris fed almost instantly and wasn't weighed for over an hour after birth, finally weighing in at a chunky 8

She is gorgeous Hep! I want your labour when it's my turn! Maybe all the RL tea, pineapple etc helped after all! Even if it didn't help to induce your labour! Congrats to you and your family again. Xx
