Our list is as follows:
skirt or pinafore dress (will probably get both)
Long or short sleeved collared blouse
sweatshirt or cardigan
+ tie, book bag, shoes, socks etc.
So, how many of each do I need?

Good question, I'll be interested in the replies!
I bought a few bits when sainsbury's had their 25% off clothes the other week, got 6 polo shirts, 2 pairs of trousers and 2 jumpers - some I know will be too big to start with (he's a bit of a shorty) and I'll buy the right size if he's not shot up in height nearer the time, but he'll grow into them at some point.

I'm going to get 5 polo shirts ( all have to be embroidered so cost a bomb), 2 trousers, 1 shorts, 2 jumpers, 5 socks

OOh what an interesting thread BoB!!
I think that i will buy 2 skirts, 1 dress (and maybe a pair of trousers if they are allowed)
a cardi and a jumper
socks and tights
polo shirts and blouses.
The problem i have is deciding on the right size to get!

PS I'm getting 5 to 6 for my larger than average 4yr 6mth old.
04/06/2013 at 14:59
Yes I'll get that size too I think

I'd go with at least:
1 pe kit
I wouldn't bother with summer dresses personally as they start in a Winter term, but if you do just get one as it will only be worn a handful of times.

I have to say my boys get through a lot more jumpers than polo shirts - as the jumper is on top, this is what they will spill their yoghurt down or coat with glitter and paint. Ideally I would have 5 jumpers each for them and 2 or 3 polo shirts (since little kids don't really get too sweaty, and they take in PE kit for that anyway).
We get through masses of trousers as they always rip the knees out of them, I've no idea what they do to do this so regularly!
Daughter not in school yet so no experience of girls' uniform yet!

Good point Pingu.
04/06/2013 at 16:54
Very good points Belle and Pingu. I wasnt going to bother with a summer dress, that can wait.
BoB - L already wears 5 year old leggings, so i think that 5-6 is a good idea.

Thanks for that tip pingu! Anyone else find it rather annoying when your school insist on everything embroidered even pe kit. So expensive! If only I could get the cheap polo shirts etc

I've just kitted out Zoe in the M&S 20% off deal. I have gone for
2 x pinafores in age 5-6 which fit her pefectly
2 x pinafores in age 6-7 (would do for an emergency but are a bit big at the moment, hoping we can get 2 days out of a pinafore but will have these as back up - this was a tip from my friend)
1 x BHS pinafore (is all in one with the polo shirt, isn't great quality so only got one for PE days)
4 x polo shirts from M&S (we've gone for the girls one with the picot trip for something a bit prettier)
I will be getting 2 x logo cardigans which we have to order from school, along with the water bottle and book bag. PE kits is black shorts and white t-shirt. I've got the jersey cycling shorts from M&S and will just put a plain white t-shirt in that Zoe is wearing over the summer.
I have also got 4 summer dresses as I am pretty sure that Zoe will wear them for starting the term in September, got them a bit big so hopefully will still fit when they start wearing them again around Easter time. To be honest Zoe is likely to be in the summer dress with tights even in the winter at this rate as she is adamant she isn't wearing the "boring grey dress)

Workinghard I think it's shocking that they insist on logo'd uniform for such a young age. A jumper or cardi OK but everything? Ridiculous. Louie's nursery uniform is £5 a polo as it has the logo on them and they have bobbled so much, yet all his standard polos are bobble free. Go figure!

WH, presuming it isn't a private school then they can't actually insist on any uniform. They can strongly recommend but they can not insist.

Iz (year 1) has 5 polo shirts and her's is filthy every day and 4 cardigans. She has 3 skirts but at the moment is living in summer dresses which she has 4 of. I work away quiet a bit and can't easily wash things during the week so she needs to have enough on a Sunday night to last her through the whole week.

M is too skinny for trousers or skirts so she'll be in dresses. I'm going to get 5. I'll also get just as many polo shirts (she just needs plain white).
I'll get a couple of the school logo cardigans but have it in the back of my mind that I'll end up having 5 so I can do a mammoth school was at the weekends.
I've got age 4-5 stuff from M&S and it would fit M now. My mum is taking M shopping for the rest and I may ask her to get age 5-6. M still fits in 3-4 stuff though!

used two cardis, 2 sweatshirts, 4 polos, 2 skirts, 2 trousers and 1 pinney & 4 summer dresses. She's in Reception. they haven't done too bad altho agree cardis take the brunt of the mess. She wasn't keen on the trousers but on really cold days was able to convince her.
04/06/2013 at 21:15
That's interesting then. Irritatingly they can have plain white shirts but not plain polos!
04/06/2013 at 21:25
I'd recommend buying pinafore dresses rather than skirts. I wish I'd done this as the dresses keep the polo shirts cleaner.
I bought 4 school sweatshirts as they get dirtier especially from school dinners (although they've lasted two school years so I feel I'm getting my money's worth).
I bought two summer dresses which she wore at the start of reception - we had a very warm autumn so she did get lots of use out of them that year and again in the summer term. They spend a lot of time sitting on the floor so anything she hasn't thrown food down gets dusty from that. They also don't use washable marker pens which really annoys me.
I think I bought 4 skirts, a pinafore dress and 2 summer dresses and 2 pairs of trousers which were too big for reception (the trousers only got worn in year one).
Label everything and preferably label jumpers in more than one place.
