I want to start expressing but am pretty clueless and don't really know what i'm doing, so apologies for the silly questions...
Which boob do i express from in terms of what side i last fed from - does it matter? Do you tend to express just before a feed is due, or just after?
I guess i'd just like to hear any expressing 'routines'.
I have a pump and am initially planning to just build up a stock in the freezer so that i can spend the odd evening away from the LO.

Also, one side is quite sore and i use a shield on that side...should i avoid expressing from that side - will it aggrevate it?

I don't think I did it the 'proper' way but I used to just offer one side over night then in the morning I'd express from the other. I'd always get loads doing it this way. And feeding from one side while expressing from the other meant the flow was faster

I do EXACTLY the same as Ally! I don't express every morning as I'm not always able to, depends how much A is causing a fuss, but try to do it at least every other day. At the moment I'm just expressing for the milk bank at the hospital and usually get around 100-150ml easily (within about 10 mins); when/if A finally learns to take a bottle consistently then I'll really up the effort to express every day and build up a little store for him.

Also, not sure about the sore nipple, but don't forget that the shields come in different sizes (or the Medela ones do anyway). I could barely get anything with their standard-size shield (the bit that actually goes over your nipple) so had to get a smaller one.

With A I expressed about 11pm before I went to bed, from both sides. I knew she would sleep to 7am so plenty of time for boobs to refill. Whereas with Lhe fed constantly overnight so I would feed from one side all night and express from the other side in the morning.
It really depends on you and your baby I think.

I also did exactly the same as Ally as I found that worked best for me in terms of getting the most milk, although not every day - maybe 3/4 times a week
