    Hi all,

By coincidence, I posted just this morning about early scans. Well, we got our BFP two weeks ago quite unexpectedly (hubby has low motility and morphology). ANYWAY, we had an appt with our Gyn today which we kept (were expecting to be referred for IVF). So we tell him we conceived and he says 'Do you want me to have a look?' and gives me a vaginal scan!

Before the scan he told us he may even be able to detect a heartbeat so of course we get all excited. All he could see was the gestational sac which measured 7.4mm. He says it needs to be 15mm to see anything else and has booked us in for another scan at the EPU in 3 weeks time. He did say that my dates might be slightly out which might account for why he couldn't see more. I should point out that he didn;t seem unduly concerned and said we didn;t have anything to worry about BUT...

While all these free scans are great I am now freaking out that not much is happening! Anyone else have a scan this early and, if so, what could you see?

Jeez, I'm gonna have a nervous breakdown by the time I hit 12 weeks....

Don't worry, theres very little chance of seeing anything at less than 6 weeks pregnant, even with a vaginal scan.

He saw the sac and didnt seem concerned about anything, and you'll see much more at your next scan.

Try not to panic, everything will be fine xx

    Hi KayeCee

that really is a coincidence following your posts from earlier today.

I am no expert but try not to worry. As far as I know 5 weeks is very early for a scan so I wouldn't expect to see much more than you did.
He was not concerned so you shouldn't be either.

I am sure that your next scan will be here before you know it. When I booked mine it wasn't for another three weeks and now it is on friday. It has come around so fast.

    xx

    Hi KayeCee

At least you can have some free scans which solves the dilema of paying for a private one and still having the chance of it being too early to see a hb!

I know it's difficult not to worry but try not to. The EPU won't even scan you before 6 weeks because you are unlikely to see anything other than the gestational sac before then. And like you said, the consultant wasn't worried. And a few days makes SO much difference at that early stage - when you think that at 6 weeks they are looking for something that is literally mm's big!

It is nervewraking, I understand that. By 12 weeks we'd had 7 scans (because of brown discharge, bleeding and my history of recurrent mc) and we were so nervous before each scan.

I really hope everything continues to go well.

    Love NN 18+5 xxx

    Hi Kayecee,

Just popped on for a nose & had to log on just to reply to your post.

I had a 1st scan at 5+2 as also had gynae apt booked for that day & the sonographer warned me that all she would see would be the sac which we did, this is normal at 5 weeks gestation.

Good luck for your nxt one in 3 weeks xxx

this soudns like me! i had a scan booked in with fertility clinic before my bfp. i called them to ask if woulld still get the scan, and they brought it forward! they said sac looked about 4-5 weeks. i said i thought i was 5+4. doc said that seems about right. no heartbeat so they booked me in for 3 weeks later. which turned out to be 8+4 (see, trust be people!) and this time there was a heartbeat and baby movement. i say baby but it was more like a cashew nut. HOWEVER, be warned they did cancel my 12 weeks scan, because the 12 week scan is a dating scan and if they date you at 8 weeks they wont need to give it to you. we are going private for it.

Thanks everyone - you've made me much more relaxed. Calleigh - our situation sounds exactly the same! I will bear in mind that the might cancel the 12 week one but I'll be happy as long as everything is where it should be in 3 weeks! Blimey, I thought it would be reassuring, but it's just created more blinkin' questions than it answers! xxx

I got scanned about the same time with my 12 week old and all that could be seen was a tiny sac. Apparently it is very rare to find a heartbeat before six weeks. I had a further scan at 6+4 because of bleeding - no heartbeat. Went back at 7+2 and there was a healthy baby with a heartbeat, Try not to worry unduly hun, it's not good for you, or the baby.x

    Hey

I had a scan at what I thought was 7 weeks due to bleeding but when I got there was told they could only see a sac which would put the pregnancy at 5 weeks. This fitted with my dates, but I was still really worried. Anyway 2 weeks later I went back to see if the preg had progressed and the heartbeat was there. I think it is too early to see much at apart from the sac at 5 weeks. I had a vaginal scan and tummy scan at 5 weeks and they just saw the sac and then at 7 weeks they picked the heartbeat up with just the tummy scan.

Feel like I'm waffling but I really just wanted to reassure you and keep my fingers crossed for you all is fine. It all sounds normal.
