Just thought I'd post on here in case anyone is like I was about having a sweep. After reading so many horror stories I have been a nervous wreck all day. I find smear tests painful and was dreading it. Anyway told the midwife how scared I was and tried my best to relax. You know what? I survived! It was uncomfortable but not painful it agony as one friend told me. I was taken aback at how much she rummaged up there but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought. It really wasn't. Just wanted to share in case someone out there has one and they are worrying. If I can get through it and bd fine then so can you!

I found mine quite uncomfortable but not painful but the thing that surprised me was how much blood came out (her gloves were covered), glad I took a pad to wear straight after mine! I hope this is the start of things for you, my daughter arrived less than 36 hours after my sweep (sweep was at 40 + 2), good luck x

Glad it was bearable! A friend of mine said they didn't worry her at all, uncomfortable but that was all.
I've had several, the worst had tears running down my face and I hated every moment. But my cervix goes walkies up and to the side so maybe there was more rummaging required. I reminded of All Creatures Great and Small, arm-in-cow scene.

That's a great point Blackkat, to take a pad to a sweep.

CG - couldn't see your due date on the list on the pinned thread. Are you over/due? x

I know I'm more of a lurker! I'm overdue by two days and she said I was 1cm dilated with the membranes right and shiny over baby's head - whatever that means! I just thought I'd post about how it might not be as horrendous as you think as I was so scared! As someone else said I also thought it was like a cow and vet! Was shocked at how vigorous she was!

Ooh, so things could be moving along. :)
Keep us posted x

Thank you! I had a little meltdown at my midwife appointment yesterday when she booked my induction and said there wasn't any sign of anything happening yet. I was hopeful that 1cm dilated meant something might be happening but her comment about the membrane being 'tight and shiny' apparently means waters not going soon? I don't know, first time Mum so clueless! I'll let you know if anything happens!x

Don't be disheartened! I had 4 sweeps and went 10 days over, you do know that you can refuse an induction? Hope things start for you soon.

I was just going to say about the refusing induction. I never knew this 1st time round but I feel more armed & ready this time (desperately want a home birth). In some countries, including France they don't consider it overdue until 41 weeks & there are lots of mums, who I've read about recently, who've had babies at 43 weeks. Good luck & I hope you're feeling ok www.theguardian.com/.../pregnant-for-10-months
