Hi. I have a friend in the early stages of an ivf pregnancy. She is very worried that at approx 7 weeks the baby is only measuring at 4 weeks. She has 2 weeks until a further scan. I wanted to buy her a book that may help her understand ivf pregnancy more and help her to feel positive, which she hasn't so far. Do you have any suggestions?

If she shoud be 7 weeks but is only measuring 4 that is concerningI'm sorry to say. If this were a regular (non ivf) pregnancy I would say there is more hope as dates of conception can be off / miscalculated in a natural cycle so the embryo could be smaller for that reason... but with ivf, the dates are known exactly... If she should be 7 weeks but the embryo is the size of a 4 week one & no heartbeat was seen then this is not normal for a 7 week scan. It can be ok to be a few days behind but i've never heard of being 3 weeks behind (for sure) & this progressing to a healthy pregnancy. I'm so sorry.... i just would not want her to get her hopes up to have them crushed when she goes back in 2 weeks.
if this helps at all... My sister also went through ivf, the first 2 attempts sadly failed however her third attempt was successful & she is now mum to a gorgeous 19month old boy. her advice would be to never give up on your dreams...the wait & struggle is all worth it.

Luckily there was a healthy heartbeat but she's wortied it's not developing as fast as it should be

Oh that's great news! If they saw heartbeat then it is definitely more dveloped than 4 weeks... A heartbeat can't be detected until around 6 weeks (only starts beating towards the end of week 5) so she is actually not that far behind at all.
