I apologise in advance as I'm sure this has been asked countless times before but...
does anyone have a decent list of what you need to buy and when, example I was panicking about the number of stair gates I need until it was pointed out that I don't need them for a while after baby is here.
i would also like to ask what your most useful purchases were, excluding the obvious like pram etc, and what did you buy and barely used.

I found that the stuff bought ready for baby arriving was all we needed until around 6 mths when we started to need highchair, slightly different toys etc. Then the next one was around crawling when it was stair gates and other things for baby proofing the house.

I'll be watching this thread with great interest! Can I piggy back on this and ask about clothes for newborns, how much do they wear? What I mean is, those little sleeveless popper vest things, do you still put that on under a babygrow or not? Do you get different babygrows for day than to sleep in...yes I am clueless!

Isla didn't wear any proper clothes til at least three months and that was only for special occasions. But undoubtedly you'll get gifts of outfits as well as baby grows. Isla has only ever worn the short sleeved poppered vests, even in the winter this is enough as the heating is on most of the time. Yes they will need a vest on under a baby grow, you don't really get baby grows for day and night just more fancy ones that you might not want them to sleep in. In the very early days if Isla had kept a Baby grow clean all day then we'd put her to bed in it too. Layering is key. As for quantity I would go for at least 7 of each (baby grows and vests) to start with. You'll have a few leaky poos as a new born. As long as you have enough to start you off you can always buy more but you'll get given loads xx

For me a pram/pushchair wasn't a necessity. In fact I wish I hadn't bothered buying 1. I bought a sling (a connecta) when my daughter was 3 months old & have used the pushchair a handful of times since. I still use the Connecta & my daughter is nearly 18 months old. I got a baby bath from freecycle but didn't really get on with it (I found she was too slippery in it) but bought a bath seat which was fab. I bought a lot of stuff from freecycle or sites on facebook selling very good quality second hand things so you don't need to spend much.

Secondhand stuff is great, especially for things you either need for a short time or ones you aren't sure about which to buy (you can easily sell on)

Don't bother with toiletries - talk, soaps etc. you won't need them.
Lots of muslins were very handy - under babies head in crib/pram to keep sheets clean, a light cover, sunshade, bib etc

Can I ask about quantiites of sizes?
Mum told me not to bother with Newborn or First size as they will grow so quickly, so i have some 0-3 months and 3-6 months. How many of each size would you reccomend?
On average, how many do they get through in a day?!

L was also in Sleepsuits until she was about 3 months old and only in proper 'outfits' for special occaisions. It helped that it was winter.
I used to make sure I changed her everyday and wiped her down. I used to put a vest on her and then a sleepsuit, so much more practical. Newborns need just one extra layer more than what we do, so a vest was perfect.
I dont know how many changes she had in a day, only if she was sick or a pooey nappy leaked, otherwise i kept her in the same outfit. I would let her have a little nappy off time before bed, and then put a fresh sleep suit on her for her to go to sleep usually after a bath too.
I didnt bother with bubblebath and lotions etc. i just used warm water to start with and then i introduced dove soap. I used to use olive oil on her skin and massaged her daily.
Mrs Bass - i used a few up to 1 month size babygrows as they havent quite stretched out when they are born so everything else looks massive on them! but they quickly go into 0-3 size.
