Big H used to have a lovely 2 hour nap around lunchtime when he was a baby/toddler. I think this is quite common?? Little H (3 months) was doing the same, although as he's so young things have been a bit random. But he now keeps waking up after about 30/40 minutes and cries. Once I pick him up and calm him down he generally nods straight off so I'm pretty sure he's tired, but as soon as I try and put him down again, he cries. Each time I try to put him down it takes longer to calm him down so I generally end up comforting him and then let him sleep on me for the remaining hour and a half or so. I think the 30 min waking is quite a common problem and the internet is full of crying down/shush pat etc methods, but with a 4 year old to deal with I don't really have the time, or the inclination (patience!!) if I'm honest, to do this, plus he's so young still. I quite enjoy our sleepy cuddles really, but it's really tricky on the days big H is here as I can't do much to entertain him for the hour and a half.
So, is it quite common for babies/toddles to have a sleep at this time, or was I just lucky with big H? If so, will he just learn to sleep longer at this time again by himself? Also, he settles himself quite nicely most of the time at night and I'm a bit worried that by holding him to sleep at lunchtime it's going to mess that up and he'll be wanting to be held at 4am. Any thoughts??

No advice really as my H doesn't self settle but he doesn't have a nap around lunchtime to answer one of your questions. Sounds like you have two pretty good sleepers there though

To be honest I think little H is just a bit young ....O's naps varied in length and number from day to day at that age....I'd say we only really settled into a proper routine around the 1yr mark where he has 1-2hrs over lunchtine (his only nap....weep!) Maybe he'll go back off if you try to settle him without picking him up? X

We don't really have a long lunchtime nap here. At the moment A (16 weeks) is waking at 5am for a feed, goes back down till 8ish, feeds again, has a 40 minute nap about 10, has lunch, then doesn't really nap in the afternoon. Has a feed about 4 then goes down for a couple of hours, before being fed about 7. Then we do playing, bath, baby massage and then sometime down again for an hour or so, or sometimes just awake until his next feed, then straight to bed.
Have no idea what's normal though!! A settles himself after his last feed and after the 5am one, although we have to use the slumber bear during the day.

Thanks for you replies ladies. I think perhaps I am expecting too much of him at this age and worrying too much about creating bad habits. Will just have to hope he gets the hang of it as he gets older. It would just be nice to have a longer block of time so I can give big H some attention before he heads off to school in September.
LM - the more alert he's getting the less of a good sleeper he is!! How is your little H getting on? Hope you are both ok x
Coco - I've tried settling him without picking him up but that just seems to wind him up even more!
SC - I don't think there is a 'normal'! Sounds like you and A have a nice little pattern going on there and A doesn't seem to have a problem napping for longer than 30 mins, perhaps he could have a word with H!
Thanks again ladies x
