I think I have/ an getting this, I had fever and chills Sunday and Monday and yesterday noticed two areas if redness and hardness and my boob now aches I notice it more at night when rolling. Can't book a drs appointment today as d has her jabs and I don't know what she will be like afterwards. I tried to express off anything extra after she's fed but this hasn't been more than a few drops. Any tips on what I can do before I can get to drs?
I might possibly look into the walk in centre being able to help me later today if she seems ok

Massage towards the nipple. Get the shower and try to express whilst pointing hot water at lumps/red bits. Keep feeding, feeding, feeding, in fact try to express before feeding and then baby will help 'empty' the boob for you

massage and pump. it will hurt but help the blockage. definitely get some anti-b if you feel unwell with a fever. x

Thanks ladies for advice, as it happened her jabs have been changed to tomorrow so I went to dr instead, he confirmed, said good we got it early as only slightly sore at moment and I have anti biotics for a week. However d is being really fussy on that boob now all the time and just keeps crying and thrashing around put on other boob and fed fine for 10 mins then fussed... Think that one was wind though. I have expressed off that boob twice today but only got 2 Oz off. Worried that dehydration and lack of food over last couple of days due to fever sweats and nausea have affected my supply. I can normally get 3-5 off the good boob, but expressed that this morning so I could feed off the bad one again and only got half an oz off that one, so now worried about that too

try not to worry (easier said than done I know). Take the anti-biotics, drink plenty and keep feeding from both sides.

You need to do warm compresses and massage before feeding. Then feed on the infected boob first. Can you try different positions? Ideally you want babies chin on the side where the redness is (it's their chin which massages the ducts). Once you've fed from the infected boob you can top up from the other one. If the second boob isn't emptied make sure you express it to comfort (not empty), to keep your supply up.
Use cold compresses after feeding, and put cabbage leaves in your bra. Take ibuprofen for the inflammation, and paracetamol for the pain.
I've been hospitalised with mastitis, so I know how bad it can get. You really don't want that.
If the hardness doesn't go down you can get ultrasound on it. I go to our local phsyio who is experienced in it. You have 5 minute of ultrasound on the hardness, and it softens the milk in the ducts, allowing it to drain. The redness is caused by milk leaking into the surrounding tissue so the antibiotics will help with that.
I'd recommend printing off the mastitis leaflet from teh Breastfeeding Network ( www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/.../BFN_Mastitis.pdf ). It's really helpful.
Also, if possible, take a probiotic, to try and prevent thrush from the antibiotics you are on.
How is your latch? One of the causes of mastitis is nipple damage, caused by a poor latch, so don't let her feed if she isn't on properly. Keep putting her on until it's right, as a baby feeding properly is the most efficient way to get rid of the milk.

Thanks sc that's really helpful. I think latch is ok, we had problems at start of feeding, and had help and also had it checked when we went to hospital due to her bad silent reflux. My nipple damage was pretty bad in first week, both nipples were torn open on side and have only really this week made a massive progress in healing so sure it wasn't that as infection would have occurred earlier. I think it might be because how much her hunger changes day to day depending on how bad her reflux is, we seem to have finally got levels of medicine right she has fed less so hasn't drained it as we'll, although I do express when I feel she hasn't emptied it much.
I have 2 red spots one is on top and one just under armpit. I tried rugby ball position once and didn't get on with it but will try again, not sure how to do top one though! Will also get the probiotic things tomorrow as don't think I can handle anything else at the moment!
