I'm booked in to have it fitted next week but I'm crapping myself. Is it painful, will it be uncomfortable, will I know it's there?! I know I've had 2 babies and fingers galore up there (I mean midwives and doctors, not lots of men!) but i feel sick thinking about it. So much so I'm putting myself off having it...

Yep I've had 2, it was a bit uncomfortable when it was being put in but really not bad at all, and nothing compared to child birth lol!
You will probably experience some cramping for a little while afterwards while it settles down but other than that you wont know it's there. I swear by it, best form of contraception and practically stopped my periodS!

Thank you, that's reassuring! Did it take long to fit it?

It was similar to having a smear I thought. With some cramping for 24-48 hrs afterwards. I took 2 paracetamol before my appointment. Not sure if it was really needed though.
I did have a lot of bleeding afterwards for 8/9 months. But I suspect mine was never in right to start with as I fell pregnant with it in 2 yrs later, and it pretty much fell out.

I will be honest. I found it painful being put in, the bleeding and cramping never stopped, I was miserable, I could "feel" there was something in my body it didnt like, my partner felt it during sex, i found it really uncomfortable too. However, I have had Gynea problems for a long time so that may be why i had such a horrible experience!

I don't have the mirena, but I have the non-hormonal one. It's not pleasant, but it's over quickly and just feels like a smear. 2 paracetamol before is a good suggestion. I've had 2 fitted (one before having T, one after) and I've never known it was there! The thought of it will be worse than the actual thing I'm sure! x

I'm having a smear at the same time!! hmmm, I'm guessing if I keep bleeding or it doesn't feel right, I just go straight back to my doctor... I do not want to have more children so that's a worry LR!
Yuk to feeling it during sex too

I have the non hormonal coil and was a little uncomfy to put in but it wouldn't put me off. I did bleed a bit after it was put in and had period like cramp for the rest of the day. I did have really heavy periods for about 8 months afterwards but then went back to normal. My H can't feel it during sex and I can't feel it and can forget its there. So the only thing that I didn't like was the heavy periods for 8 months I did consider having it taken out if my periods didn't settle, but they did, thank goodness

Thanks Yoyo. My doctor recommended the Mirena Coil as she thinks it will help my ridiculously heavy periods settle, if not disappear altogether. She really seemed to think it was the easiest and best form of contraception for me so I'm trusting her!

I have the mirena, I've had it twice the first one before Ben and it bloody well hurt!! The second one I didn't even notice her doing it (I was 6 weeks post birth!) I found it fab, but did have some pain before I had it taken out for ttc. I actually dont think the pain was related now, but I would definitely recommend it

I have endo and rediculously heavy bleeding, that's why I had the Mirena. Bleeding for up to 6 months is quite normal I think, hence why I persivered for so long! Feeling it during sex means its not in right or the strings need trimmed. My gynae thinks mine failed because of the heavy bleeding. TMI but the 2 periods before mine dislodged I was passing large clots, this has pro ably moved it.
When it was working it was great for about a year. Ill use it again after this baby x

Thanks for the insight everyone. I'm going ahead with it. I don't see many other options for us as although we are done having children, I can't let H have the snip or me be sterilised. It's just too final! I'll let you know how I get on with it.
