People keep joking to my H and I to 'be careful because you are more fertile after having a baby' - it's a phrase I've heard before too... is there actually any truth in it? Has anyone had trouble conceiving baby 1 then gone on to get pregnant much easier/quicker when having baby 2?

I heard that you're very fertile straight after you've given birth but I don't know how long it lasts. We started TTC 18 months after having our 1st & both times it took 6 months so I don't think it made me any more fertile!!

I had to get a rubella injection after i had W and was told not to get pregnant for at least 6 months, but i have heard that you are very fertile after you have a baby, but like BK, i have no idea how long for. We started TTC 14/15 months after having W and fell first month trying, and that's after 6 months on the pill too, so i don't really know how much truth there is in it. I think it's subject to the individual tbh.

I think it's comes from the fact that your periods don't return immediately (especially if BF they tend to stay away longer) and people mistakenly believe because your not having periods you can't get pregnant, whereas they are actually going to return at any time!

It was true in my case. I didn't breast feed so periods returned about 6-8 weeks later after #1. I was pregnant 4 months later. I was very naïve, because it took me 19 months to fall pregnant the first time I decided that I wouldn't go on the pill and that we'd be careful. Obviously we weren't careful enough.

Every health visitor/midwife I saw after having S told me to be very careful as after having a baby you're super fertile. Having someone tell me that two days after labour when I was in agony with stiches made me laugh because sex was waaaay down the list of priorities! I've only just had my first period (and I didn't breastfeed), so I have no what's going on with my cycles. I'll be being extra cautious though, just in case!
It took my best friend a year to conceive her first. He'll be 1 next week and her second is due in November so that's scared me too!

Yes it's very true, not for everyone of course but many who took a while to conceive no1 conceive much quicker 2nd time. H's cousin had 3 rounds of IVF for no1 (issues on both sides) and then fell pregnant again when he was 7 months old naturally - massive shock! Have heard many similar stories.

It's true for me. Two years from starting ttcing for our first before he was conceived but I fell pregnant with number 2 whilst still Breastfeeding, with irregular periods and very rare dtd!

My Aunt went for her 6 week check, and found out she was pg again. This was after it took over a year to conceive her first.

Ten months ttc #1, one month ttc #2.
We had hoped it would be quicker second time as that seems to often be the case, but didn't want to assume that so didn't leave it too long to start trying
