Since I'm up and feeding Violet I thought I'd try to do my birth story whilst it's still fairly fresh in my mind.
I'd had a feeling throughout the pregnancy that I'd be early with this baby, and from about 38 weeks I started getting lots of rumbly period pains which made me think I was probably right. I was not. My due date came and went, and I was exceedingly grumpy about it as I'd really struggled this pregnancy towards the end and was so very ready to have a baby. At 40+5 I had a sweep which produced more cramps and a show, but nothing further happened.
At 40+8 I'd had a normal day, been very uncomfortable all day with heat/spd and general pregnancy discomfort, but no signs that anything was happening. At about 10.30pm I started to get ready for bed, and as I was washing my face I had a fairly uncomfortable tightening. Then while I was brushing my teeth I had another. They weren't lasting long, but hurt while they did, enough to lean over and rock through them. H was playing x box so I went and reported that I was having contractions, but that I didn't think anything was likely to come of them - I'd had tightenings on and off or weeks, so although these were more painful I didn't quite believe it meant anything was happening. With that said they were coming quite fast, every few minutes, so I called my mum who was going to look after Jacob while I went to hospital and warned her that things might be happening and to be on standby. I tried to have a lie down, but that hurt, so went back to leaning over and rocking. H was starting to look a bit concerned, and I decided to start timing the contractions at 11.02- (per my phone contraction timer.) Contractions were every 3 mins, but only lasting 30 secs so I didn't think i would be getting anywhere, but was starting to believe things were definitely happening. We decided to call my mum back at about 11.30 and asked her to come. I also got my tens machine on as I'd loved it with my last labour.
By 11.50 contractions were down to every 2 and a half mins, and I called the hospital to see if they'd let me come in, they asked if I wanted to wait a bit longer but I said no, it felt like I needed to come now. The call took a little while as they insisted on talking to me rather than H, and i couldn't talk through the contractions, so by the time i got off the phone it was about midnight. While I was on the phone my mum arrived so we were set to go. I felt like I needed to pee all the time, and had kept doing so/trying every other contraction or so, so went for a last wee before setting off, but as I got in the bathroom and got my trousers and pants down my waters exploded with a pop and soaked the floor. I called H and mum for help, contractions were now coming every 2 mins and I was struggling to move. I got new pants and a maternity pad on, then felt an urge to start pushing. It was about 12.20am by this point. I decided I wasn't going to be able to get in the car and travel to hospital whilst pushing so asked H to call an ambulance. Everything goes a bit blurry at this stage, I was in the bathroom leaning over the bath and panicking as I knew the baby was coming and there was just me, H and mum. Mum was gathering towels and preparing to catch. A first response paramedic arrived really quickly and came to see, he said he couldn't see the baby crowning yet, but I knew it was very close. I wasn't really giving pushing my all as I was scared and it really chuffing hurts, but after help arrived I got on it and started actually trying! A couple of mins later an ambulance crew arrived too - the small bathroom was getting a bit crowded. They asked if I could lie down on my back, I told them to jog on and that I couldn't move, and we compromised
