12 weeks since my first post asking for help with names we're not really any further on.
H has vetoed my favourites of Nathaniel and Georgiana, which I'm gutted about. He's only offering up Raphael for a boy, which I do like but not sure if it's too pretentious. For girls he wants Katherine, which I'm vetoing. He's come up with quite an eclectic list of names - see below. Josephine is the only one I like, nn Josie. I've said I'll do a list for him, but I'm really struggling :-(
Rules I've set myself; Can't begin with A, prefer a long name with a variety of shortenings, has to work with Cox, must be timeless - not suddenly risen up the rankings.
Rachel, Katherine, Josephine, Ripley, Beatrix, Serena, Trinity, Whitney, Haleigh, Helaina, Isabelle/a, Zara. I think it's a very random list!
If my brother didn't have an Ellie, Eleanor would be a serious contender for both of us.

From his list i LOVE Beatrix, it looks like haleigh is a made up spelling, the same as helaina but that's because my friend is Helena (pronounced hel-een-ah) for all I know though they might be actual spellings iyswim but in my mind they don't look right (sorry)
And omg wtf is Whitney . (Although my hs serious contributions consisted of Aguero and Samir nasri, o and just 'our surname' )
Beatrix sounds nice with A.
Do you know you are having a girl?
10/04/2013 at 22:06
Btw if you like Eleanor I'm sure that's a variation if Helen so could you look for Helen variants (or I could have imagined that ]

Katherine and Josephine fit your criteria, don't they?

CP - I cracked up when I saw Whitney in his list. He's dead keen on Ripley too. His list looks like it's a mix of names from the 70's and names from babies whose parents feature on Jeremy Kyle. I agree with you in the spellings of Haleigh and Helaina too.
Beatrix was my original favourite from his list, but I discounted it as it's a lot of X
s with Alex and also with Cox. It almost rhymes with Alex too.
We don't know if it's a boy or girl yet, I think I'm focussing on girl names as I'm trying to get my head round the idea if having a girl and think it'll help if we agree on a name I love. Boys suggestions are also required.
Rusty - they do, but I've really gone off Katherine/Katie, it was our choice for if Alex was a girl, but I never really loved it, just agreed to it to get my way with Alexander for a boy. I'm liking Josephine more and more, but now H isn't sure about it, argh! I'd have been sorted weeks ago if he didn't have to get a say.

Jennifer is H's aunt, quite disliked by H's mum. I did suggest it as a potential name just to wind MIL up though.

If you like Beatrix but can't have it, there is Beatrice? Jennifer/Jenny/Jen? I like Josephine/Josie too. If you like a name and he is not keen just don't mention it for a while else he'll go off it even more ;-) H didn't like Annie when I first suggested it so I came up with others then out of the blue a few weeks later he said it had really grown on him. I think men like to feel something is their idea sometimes, bunch of wallys.

I really like Josephine and Isabelle/a from your H's list.
Names that i can think of that fit your criteria (some more than others) include - Emily, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Sophie / Sophia, Jacinda, Lucinda, Harriet, Penelope, Matilda, Jacqueline, Joanna, Jemima, Scarlet, Roseanna, Natalie, Naomi, Gabrielle, Felicity, Hannah, Sacha, Tamara, Phillipa, Suzanne/a, and Eliza.
ETA - Lauren, Laura, jasmine

All I can think of to add to the names already given are Charlotte, Elissa and Stephanie.

Jennifer is out, I have a couple of friends called it, but more importantly it's H's Aunt's name who MIL loves to hate, she would be distraught. I've already said that Imifht wind her up and say that's the name we're thinking of though.
Hmmm, Beatrice could work. I much prefer Beatrix, with Trixie as a nn though. Will suggest it.
DIamonds - lovely to 'see' you, from your list I love Harriet, Jemima and Phillipa. Harriet I prefer the shortening Harri rather than Hattie and not sure that goes with Cox. That was until I met a Harriet Cox a few months ago who reassured me she never had anything more than the same Cox jokes I got in the playground as a kid. H did mention that last night too. Jemima H has vetoed and Philippa H doesn't like and it's too recently popular thanks to Miss Middleton.
Hadn't thought of Penelope for a while, will think about that one.

DS - I'm a bit meh about Charlotte, I already know a couple of little girls with that name and I'm pretty sure I couldn't do Lottie Cox!
Stephanie fits the criteria, but doesn't grab me.
Any boys suggestions? H put Reuben on the table last night, it's similar to his bosses name though so he immediately discounted it again. I reckon if he likes it we could get round that, after all he told me off for discounting names because I know a child with the name already. I quite like it but with Roo as a nn.
Hello BG just added Lauren / Laura and Jasmine to the list.
11/04/2013 at 07:56
Ok on to boys names (assuming same criteria applies) - Benjamin, Isaiah, William, Timothy, Tobias, Samuel, Harold (then you could use Harry), Sebastian, Frederick, Jonathan, Daniel, Phillip, Charles, ??
By the way I love Reuben.
11/04/2013 at 07:58
Lauren/Laura aren't timeless enough for me, my school years were full of them but you don't get many the generation above or below. Jasmine is too Disney for my liking.
11/04/2013 at 08:06
Ooh some boys names. Benjamin I'm a bit meh about and H doesn't like anyway, never heard of Isiah will think on it, William doesn't work with Cox, Timothy H says is too weak,
Tobias I love but H doesn't, Sam(uel) is my brother, Charles and Philip are actually my grandads names (and Sam's middle names) but there are too many Charlie's I know and I know 2 of my cousins want to use it, Philip doesn't work for this generation, Sebastian I should love but just don't and it's also a friend's lo's name. Not a fan of Harry for a boy, Frederick H has vetoed, Daniel and Johnathon I'm a bit meh about.
Glad you like Reuben too.

Alicia, Seraphina, Evangeline, Soraya, Aurelia

I love tobias, isaiah and sebastian for boys but struggling to think of boys names because we're having another girl and could never think of boys names we both liked!
I love beatrix for a girl and think it has a nice ring to it with cox? I like the double x sound!! And I think it's nice that it rhymes with Alex!
From your H's list, I think Haleigh will drive you insane spelled like that!! I'm a Hayley and am forever getting Haley or Halle and it drives me potty, so you would have to be prepared for even family spelling it wrong (my grandma still gets mine wrong after 27 years!)
I think Charlotte is a lovely name but it could get shortened to Charlie which I know is really popular at the moment?
How about Elaina/Elena? Bit of a cross between helaina and eleanor? Although it only really shortens to Ellie so I guess that's a bit of a problem! Not that I think it needs shortening, i think its a really pretty name! We have Elise on our list too, but again very similar to Ellie?
11/04/2013 at 08:44
Alicia and Aurelia are out as it's an A, Seraphina in my head is too similar sounding to my name (Sarah), same with Soroya. I think the recent popularity of Eve/Eva/Ava has tainted Evangaline for me, although I suggested it last night and H said he just thinks of flange - so that's out!
Elaina and Elena are indeed too similar to Ellie. I'm also discounting variations of Elizabeth for that reason too. I actually quite liked Bethany but a chavvy school friend ruined it for me by calling her daughter that, I saw it plastered over my fb for too long for me to still like it.
Gah it was so easy last time, one conversation in a pub at 16 weeks and we were sorted!
11/04/2013 at 09:05
Wow, Trinity!? That’s quite out there on a list which includes Rachel and Katherine! I like Zara, Beatrix and Josephine from his list. Can’t think of any girl suggestions on top of what’s been mentioned. Maybe Evelyn?
I think Reuben is a fab boys name! I love Rory, Elliot, Edward, Cameron, Emil and Rowan too.
11/04/2013 at 10:01
Madeleine? I love the name but I don't think we could ever use it.
Boys names are hard but I do like Sebastian and F has a friend called Reuben.
