I am in kiddicare cafe and there is what looks like an nct group of mums next to me. One is telling the others about some where she was at the weekend and recalling, in horror, that there was a woman drinking a glass of wine and BF at the same time.
I would never do that, no not me

Nope never done that ....

nope, not here either
My NCT leader said that actually, if you were going to drink, the best time to do it was whilst you were giving a feed as it won't go in the BM immediately, and by the time you feed next, it should have left the bloodstream. So I actually say well done that woman

I used to do that for the exact reason bw's NCT leader has said!

Lavender Rose - you preferred a vodka whilst feeding did you not?? ;-)
I was discussing this with my MW last month when I told her I'd be stocking up on wine whilst in France - she said 'oh I presume you won't be BFing then' My response of 'eh, yes, I can hold the baby in one hand and a glass in the other' did not go down well!

I used to do that for the same reasons the NCT teacher said. Although mine was a Mojito.

*Silly question alert* -i havent had a drink while breastfeeding as wasn't sure how it worked, how long do you have to wait till feeding again? do you have to express and ditch the milk or just wait a certain length of time?

Libby - you don't have to 'pump and dump'. The alcohol leaves your milk in the same way it leaves your blood. I would always have a drink either while feeding or just after so by the time they needed fed 3 hours later there should be no alcohol in my milk. I didn't really drink until baby was a little older and I knew they wouldn't be looking for a feed soon after the last one. Not sure what the official guidelines are.
On the few occasions when I had a night out, baby would get expressed milk and I would pump and dump to relieve engorgement

So my glass of wine AND half a cider on saturday night was a bad thing then?????
24/06/2013 at 16:26
Ha ha I've already done this several times and Sam is only 4 weeks! I'm more horrified that they haven't! Also thought during or just after a feed was the best time to drink.

But you never know how alcohol will affect your milk just like you dont know about your blood so id either pump and dump or skip a feed and feed expressed milk.

Libby, on Friday I had half a bottle of fizz and a glass of wine. I fed during and just after the first glass and she had expressed milk after that and during the night. I then fed her as normal in the morning.

Not sure what official guidelines are, but it's probably not a good idea to drink more than you would if you were driving if you're not going to pump and dump.

Yeah it was vodka and diet coke I was drinking then Ally!

I agree with Bluewater, I always used the 'driving' rule and cautioned on the safer side of that.
