I've been looking into early private early scans today...a clinic near us does them from 7wks onwards. Ladies who have had an early scan, when did you have yours? Can you see much at 7wks or is it worth waiting a little bit longer? Appointments seem to go quite quickly at the clinic so I'd like to get something booked in now.

This is like a bird's eye view of L, with leg buds on the left, head and arm buds on the right,

I went today! Based on LMP I'm 8+4, by ovulation I'm 8+2, and the measured it from several angles and came up with 7+6-8+1, so a couple days smaller than I'd have thought! I think earlier than 8 weeks you can be falsely dated too early, if your bean isn't growing at the specified rate, which seems to happen fairly often, they might date you a week behind, then you end up worrying that it's not healthy, and you cry and they book you a second scan to double check, only to find out the bean has caught up in the week since! I think from 8 weeks it's easier to get a more accurate date than earlier, you'll definitely see/hear the heartbeat if it's there, and you're unlikely to require a transvaginal scan.

I've always been advised 8 weeks is best as the dating is more accurate and you should definitely see a heartbeat. I had one booked at 8 weeks this time although I didn't go in the end as I had an nhs one at 6 weeks after a bleed. At this one I measured a week smaller than I should have but by 12 weeks I was spot on for dates.

Ours wasn't private but I had my 12 week scan at ten weeks. There wasn't really much to see but as BG says it showed that we had (just) one precious heartbeat. The twelve week scan was then incredible as you could see so much change/more.
If we were to TTC again I'd not pay for private just to see lo but I would if I were after reassurance iyswim. Congratulations again!

I had one. I thought I was about 7+4 and I was 6+3. I had to have an internal scan but I saw a baby shaped blob with a heartbeat. Totally worth the money.

I had one at 7+3 at epu following bleeding and she wasn't happy with the external view which was poor so it was transvaginal. We already had a private one booked at 9 weeks and it looked far more like a baby than the wee mouse shape at the first scan! If you can hang off then do - it'll be worth it. These first few weeks are agonising!

I saw 'blob' (that's how she described baby - our little blob!) and saw heartbeat at 7+1. I had been very anxious, waiting for something to go wrong, bad dreams etc. The scan REALLY helped me to feel better and start to believe it was real :)

I had a private scan at about 7+2 with J, and was dated a coupe of days forwards. I cold see a blob, but a blob with a heartbeat, which was all I really wanted to know. I had a scan at 7 weeks exactly with this one too, due to a bleed, and was dated a week behind, but again I could see the heartbeat, so that was the important thing. The difference in detail between 7/8/9 weeks isn't great, but as others have said your chances if being dated incorrectly are greater the earlier you have the scan. For me the payoff of seeing a heartbeat, and just the one baby in there as early as possible was worth any stress over dates- I've completely ignored the date they gave me at the early scan as I know it's completely wrong, and just due to the bean being so teeny.

I had one at 7+5 it was a clear picture externally, with a heartbeat. I just wanted it as early as possible after the first time.

Thanks so much ladies. I want to know that something is definitely there and to hear the heartbeat. DS that pic is amazing! I'll see what they have appointment-wise around 8 weeks then. Thanks again x
