Wanted to write it all down while it was fresh in my mind!
My Birth Story (Emily 30/08/2014)
Having had my son at 39+2, I was convinced my daughter would likewise be early. I even had a perfect date for her to arrive; I thought 14/08/2014 would be great, it was a Thursday so my son would be at nursery, it was before my birthday on the 18th and the date itself is pretty cool.
14th August came and went.
No problem, I thought, she still has time to get out before my birthday.
My birthday came and went.
OK. My due date was 23rd August, surely I wouldn't go overdue given that my first baby was early?
My due date came and went, along with the midwife who performed a sweep and said I was “very favourable”. I got excited... but it did nothing.
Officially overdue, I tried all the tricks, and none of them worked. I just stank of clary sage oil all the time and my legs ached from all the walking I was doing.
On Saturday 30th August I was a week overdue and totally fed up. I'd been having semi-painful 'tightenings' for the past few weeks and they had all come to nothing. The midwife had visited me again the day before and done another sweep but since the first hadn't worked, I wasn't expecting much from this one.
Going stir-crazy, in the morning I left my toddler with my husband and caught a bus into town to do some shopping. I was kind of hoping that sod's law would kick in and my waters would break on the bus...
They didn't break on the bus. On the way home I stopped off to visit my grandma and decided to walk back (50 mins) from there. My son had gone to stay with my mother to give us a bit of a break (and so he had the chance to run around in their garden, as we don't have one). My husband and I watched Doctor Who and spoke to my son on Skype. Just as we were saying goodbye, at about 8.15pm, I had what I thought was a contraction. However, since I'd been having tightenings for weeks I assumed at first that this was just more of the same, but I logged it into my contraction timer app nevertheless.
I kept logging these tightenings/contractions and they were every 6 minutes. Previously they'd been irregular. My husband started blowing up my birth pool and kept saying “I really think we should call the midwife now”. But I didn't want to call her if, as had happened before, the tightenings all came to nothing! I kept saying “No, no, I'll feel like such an idiot if she gets here and they've tailed off...”By 9.15pm however I had to admit that I was really in labour. They were getting more and more painful and closer together. Unfortunately “my” midwife was out of London but she said she would send a colleague to deliver my baby.
It got to 9.45pm and no midwife had arrived. I was contracting every 3-4 minutes and they were getting quite painful. The birth pool was blown up but we'd been told not to fill it with water until the midwife arrived. I was kneeling between our sofa and the pool, trying to breathe through each contracti
