So I was booked in for an elective c-section today but my waters broke on Friday 15th @ 10.15pm and our son Joel was born at 2.16pm on Saturday 16th August Weighing 7.12lb & 51cm long!
I wasn't concerned as only a little waters but rang labour ward to be on safe side who said to come up. OH grabbed our bags , a towel for the car & off we went. I really wasn't worried & expected to be sent home to return the next day.
they did 2 internals during which I cried, confirmed it was my waters & admitted me for a c-section first thing. Shocked is an under statement!
I was moved from labour ward to antenatal & OH sent home to return in the morning.
waters continued to completely gush from me all night & even on the way to theatre, so much so that the midwife who checked on me first thing said 'f**k me' at the mess which i laughed at! OH arrived at 9am & we had a long wait due to one anaesthetist on at wkends being used in A&E. The starvation was horrendous, if i'd known I was going to be admitted I would have stopped for a KFC on the way up!!
My birth preferences were discussed at length with midwives, consultant & the surgeon. I was given numbing cream for the Cannula which was a god send, highly recommend it. Everyone really took into account my fears & previous experiences. At 1.30pm they finally came to take us to theatre. I was terrified & crying but everyone was great - worst part was anaesthetic for spinal & being put sideways on table?! Catheter was inserted once they checked spinal had worked with an ice cube As I requested.
I felt every tug & movement but no pain at all. Was really strange! Felt pressure around my lungs for 30 seconds then a minute or 2 later out came our baby! the sister brought baby around the side of the curtain ( I didn't want it lowered) and I was just shocked I could hardly speak Except to say 'I see a todger!' Soon he began screaming & the relief was amazing!!
Rest of op flew by - I was aware of every movement - and some felt rough! Ap- but just gazed adoringly at husband & our son - I even dozed off towards the end of the surgery!!
immediate skin to skin in recovery & he took a few goes at breastfeeding but unfortunately has bad tongue tie & has been referred for surgery so I am currently expressing & formula feeding Which is difficult but it seems to be working so far.
Recovery so far is grand except for fainting when midwife took me for a shower first thing the next morning!! I think it was the blood test, catheter removal & cannula removal just minutes before that did it - the cannula part especially, actually seeing it & how long it was - yuk!
We got home this evening & I just can't explain the love & joy in our hearts for our wee man, I've never felt a love or bond like it.

Thank you all so much. I didn't want to come home yesterday, I would have loved another night to help with the expressing but I know that was only defying the inevitable & we had to come home at some point. I'm going to write a letter of thanks to everyone who was involved in my care, Im more thankful to them than they will ever know.
I don't mean to paint a light picture of a c-section, it is serious surgery, involves a lot of people & while I was terrified I firmly believe it was the best choice for me. I was 2cm dilated first thing on sat morning.
OH is being absolutely amazing, I really don't know what I would do without him.
Unconditional love can only be explained by giggling & feeling your heart will burst with joy when getting peed on!
