Midwife told me this morning that baby is still only 1/5 engaged so she has booked me in for a S&S next Monday & one the following friday (if I make it to the friday one, she'll book me in for an induction on Boxing day!)
So I have 1 week for baby to turn up, but incase they don't, thought I should prepare myself for Monday.
What should I expect? Is it on par with a smear test, or worse?!I

Ill be interested in this one too. My friends have said no worse than a smear, uncomfortable and can bleed a little but not too bad. As you know, im due to orrow but if nothing, im booked in for my sweep next tuesday 17th.

It depends on where your cervix is, mine was so high for the sweep that she couldnt reach it, same when I was first examined when in labour, but she had a good go in finding it and it was bloody agony! The one I had when I was 6cm dilated was virtually pain free, as obviously it was nice and low ready for a baby to pop out! However, the poking about by the midwife obviously did something as my waters broke that night!

My cervix is generally high too ( when i go for smears i have to sit on my hands and tilt!)
Hoping baby comes before then for you and me both!

Me too Gemini!
Porkchop I've heard that before, hopefully mine is in a nice position!
She did suggest having my first one on the fri (20th) and the 2nd on 23 or 24 but thought id try to encourage baby out before xmas!

OK well not to scare you but I only had one sweep (in hospital, after my waters had broken) and it bloody hurt. But it was over quickly, even though with mine she stuck the induction tablet up there at the same time so she was in there longer which probably didn't help.

Saisi, how come u had one after your waters broke? I thought the purpose was to encourage the waters to break?
I want to be fully prepared so even the not so pleasant stories are wanted!

Mine wasn't too bad at all, on par with the gentler smears I've had (I've been subjected to more than my fair share of smears!)
I went into labour the next day, but was 2cm at the s&s.

This is really interesting. I didn't have any sweep at all until I was 40+15 and had been sent home 'for the weekend - not enough staff' and I then arranged to go to a different hospital on 'mental health grounds' (I was going crazy, lol, and didn't want to go back to - what I perceived to be - a rubbish hospital).
Is it standard once you're at EDD?
09/12/2013 at 14:51
It will be interesting to find out the position and dilation of my cervics, if at all!
MrsB- im hoping the threat will scare them out!
Counter- I think it is standard once u hit ur due date but some midwives leave it a week or so. Like I said mine said we could wait until the 20th which would be a week after my due date but was happy to do it 2 days after too

it's nice to have the option and now it's on their radar :)

Mrs Bass: well she had to go up there anyway for the induction pessary. Apparently the stimulation up there is meant to bring on labour, and although my waters had broken I was having no contractions so I think it was a case of try the pessary and a sweep - if that hadn't worked, I'd have needed the drip.

I had 1 done at 40+2 & was already 1-2cm diated (2 by the end!). I didn't find it painful as such but it's quite uncomfortable. I was also adviced to take a pad along with me & was glad I did as there was more blood than I expected. Isobelle arrived less than 36 hours later

Thank you for the positive stories!
Fingers crossed if I do have my S&S monday, it'll work quickly!

I had one at 41 weeks, it was just like a smear test a little uncomfortable but not painful! Mine did nothin and I ended up with induction a week later, on the other hand my SIL had one and went into labour 3 hours later! Good luck I hope it works for you
