I realise this is a way off for me yet but I've been thinking about it quite a bit lately....what do they feel like?
Is it like bad period pains or does it feel like when you have a bad belly. I ask as I think (she says naively) that I would cope better with period type pains rather than bad belly type pains. I have suffered with IBS quite a bit in the past & just hate the feeling when I have it.
Of course it could be none of the above & I know everyone is different but just a pondering I'm having....

For me it was like really really bad period type pain, coming in waves every so often, and they obviously get closer together and more intense as you get closer to delivery. Sometimes it was in my back sometimes in the front.

Slightly diferent for me but mine started as a dull ache and progressed to where I was struggling to talk threw them.

Mine started in my back for a good day or so before I was in full labour and felt like an incredibly painful backache. Eventually they also came round to my front and felt like tightenings - sort of like period pains in that I wanted to curl up to stop them IYSWIM.

Like horrendous period pain, starting off lightly (so you know to prepare yourself), and gradually building up to really strong pain, but the same type as period pain, then going back down, so really like a wave.

Like period pain but worse. For me it was unmistakable as a contraction from the first one, much sharper than an ache, and it came as a wave, rising, peaking then tailing off.

My friend told me they were like really bad diarrhea cramps so thats what I will be on the look out for! lol

Thanks for the replies. Obviously it's going to hurt but I think sometimes it's easier to deal with depending on how it makes you feel. I'm not sure I could put up with diarrhea cramp pain for hours. I had that after drinking some pineapple juice the other week & I was clinging on to the kitchen work top trying to moan through the pain, I imagine contractions would be much worse!!

Mine started as back pain but my baby was back to back. Then when the contractions really started there was no denying what they were. I always wondered how I'd be able to time them as how could a pain be so defined to have a start and finish but boy how stupid was I.

Same as most others for me - like a bad period pain. My tummy felt very tight and hard with it. I had one contraction that was completely in my back and that was so much worse. I remember thinking that if they were all going to be in my back I'd go for the epidural straight awa thanks very much! It turned out to be a one off, no idea why!

Like a terrible period pain. The dull ache starts, builds and grows... It's so bad that it 'paralyses' you, then it feels like someone has their hands around your insides and is twisting and wringing, and then, if it's a really bad one, you can't think about anything but the pain and wish you would just pass out because it's too much to bear. Once it's peaked it eases off and you start to feel human again.
Then, before you've got over that one there's another coming and the anticipation of it alone makes you cry before the pain really starts.
My first labour wasnt like that but my second was and thinking about it properly makes me want to cry!
All worth it though :)

Mine started as a sickly feeling/period type pains (I thought these were just nerves as my waters had started leaking). Followed by tightenings in my stomach & pains in my back every 3mins, the pain & tightenings got stronger & more intense then were coming on top of each other. I've never felt anything like it before. It is painful but I just coped as I had to get through it to meet my baby.

I think I may be in the minority but I didn't realise I was even in labour to start with.....just felt severely constipated but was desperate to go iyswim? Then contractions came in waves like a bad period but mind were never overly long or intense, just close together. I did have a quick labour though (full dilated on arrival, 20 mins and baby there). I have suffered with severe IBS since my teens and I can honestly say I never once felt as crap during labour as I do when my ibs flares up. I think it's made me realise just how debilitating my ibs can be x

Mine felt like someone was squeezing my insides. It's a definite wave of pain, building and then decreasing. I had a long latent phase and the first 18 hours were bearable, the next 17 until my waters broke were much less so. But everyone is different.

They starts off bearable and I could breathe and bounce through them. Then they became crippling and only g&a would work, but for me they were in the very bottom of my bump and starting to spread around my back.
