Did you bother hiring a TENS machine? I ordered one with C however he was eart so it was on the doormat when I got home from having him and therefore never got to use it!
I'm wondering whether to bother or not this time round???

Mine arrived today! I used one with G and it was great. You need to use it early though - dont wait till you "need" pain relief - you put it on when you start getting contractions. Forme it was a godsend and helped me stay at home to 5cm and even then i didnt need any more pain relief for some time x

My friend is lending me one and said the same thing to me about using it early. She said that setting it up was also a good distraction during those early contractions.
Don't mean to derail your thread Munchkin, but where is the best place to buy the replacement pads?

Not sure on replacement pads as i hire mine - amazon or ebay possibly?
Also meant to say Tens hire is reduced to £21.99 in toys r us at the moment. They send it at 37 weeks and you kerp it to 42 weeks. I ordered Mon and it arrived yesterday (but i wadnt in to sign for it!!).
Mine came with the machine as I rented it from Boots xx

I didn't have one with M and not planning on using one this time.
With hindsight with M I don't think I would have got to use it anyway as everything happened so quick, my first contraction was at 1.30am and I was fully dilated when I got to hospital at 5am. This time both my midwife and consultant have said this labour could be about half the time as the first so don't hang around and get to hospital asap so I figure I can get my hands on gas and air when I need it!
Munchkin - if people say they help with the early stages, how were you in the early stages with C, was pain bearable etc or would you want pain relief quicker this time if you could, ie before getting to hospital etc I know all labours are different but I guess you can use the experience of the first to decide if you would be happy to pay/rent one this time and not use it IYKWIM?

I bought one as I found one second hand that was a similar price to hiring! Figured I'd use it for subsequent babies if I liked it, and if not then I could sell on. It was fab! Stayed at home until fully dilated. I used it pretty much all the way through labour until I fancied a bath. It doesn't take the pain away but made it manageable for me and also acted as a great distraction.

I've got a tens machine for another condition but are labour ones different? Mine says not to use in pregnancy.

I bought one with big R and used it lots. Then with little R replaced pads ect but never got round to using it in labour. x
This reminds me that I really need to get round to sorting one out!!
TP - At our NCT class the leader said that the maternity ones are different to the normal ones. Apparently normal ones won't work!!

I hired one from mamatens and they were really good. It helped for a while but once my contractions got really strong it was no good and actually made the pain worse.
I dont know if i would use one again to be honest.

I used one for early labour and I found that it did help with the milder contractions, but it made them a bit weird... in that they were fairly mild but coming every 2.5/3 minutes but made no difference to how dialated i was. As soon as i took it off my contractions died off to about 10 mins apart but were MUCH stronger and I actually started dialating.

Thanks Alocin x

I've got one and it was fab and in both labours got me to at least 6cm, before I needed any other pain relief. I bought one as I'd planned on having 2 children and figured it would cost the same as hiring one twice and I could then sell it on. I got the replacement pads from Amazon for about £5.

Ferbs I've been lent one too and just bought the replacement pads from MC, £4.99. They had to order them in for me but you can order online too :)

I bought one and used for most of my labour. It was only afterwards that I realised how effective it must've been as I'd got quite a way down the line with the tens alone. Would definitely use next time.
